  1. Lansing Community College • Presenters • Brian Nelson – Adjunct Instructor in CIT program • Karl Dietrich – FT Faculty in CIT program • 3rd largest community college in Michigan • 40,000+/- students annually

  2. Computer Information Technologies Program • The CIT program is one of the largest at the college • Part of the Technical Careers division • More than 300 sections of CIT courses run every semester (Fall/Spring) • CIT generates +/-15,000 credit hours annually • Approximately 10% of that are high school students

  3. Becoming part of the CCN • Fall 2006 League of Innovation we heard about Convergence Technology • Already had HTI and saw this as an opportunity to expand our program • We have redesigned our network curriculum twice since then and have been regularly launching new courses • Consultation with local advisory committee • New degree is much more technically oriented • Integrates a lot of the Convergence Technology material available from the CTC into our program

  4. Convergence Technology Curriculum • Current courses • HTI • Was based on the CompTIA certification • Wireless Networking & Security • Based on CWNA exam • VoIP – Cisco based (not the “official” Cisco course) • During this time LCC became a Cisco Academic partner – Cisco Academy • Cisco CCNA curriculum • 200 students have gone through CCNA training • 35% have completed all four Cisco courses • Summer CCNA review course for those wishing to take their CCNA cert exam

  5. Changes to the HTI course • DHTI Certification discontinued at end of 2009 • Certification migrated to ETA (Electronics Technicians Association) under Smarthome • CEDIA now emphasizing Home Networking (Residential Home Networking Credential) • Drawing from the above two resources for class content • More and more network based content (ex. de-emphasizing hard wire audio video distribution) • Considering changing name of course to Smarthomes (or something like that )

  6. CT Survey • The survey was emailed to 51 participants, 6 were returned as undeliverable, 1 was forwarded to another person in the organization, and 1 declined saying it was outside of his expertise; leaving a net distribution of 44 potential participants.  Of the 44 invites, 15 surveys were viewed and 11 were completed and submitted providing a return rate of 25%.

  7. Summary of Fall 2011 Survey Results • 90% of respondents use some type of virtualization software • Of those 80% use VMware • 64% said skills in VM is a very important skill for a technician to have • “depending on the position. Someone having VM skills will have an advantage in the IT environment” • 64% said they are using their current IT staff to support their virtualization • 82% use their current IT staff to manage the data center

  8. Summary of Fall 2011 Survey Results • 55% would prefer vendor specific Storage Management training while 45% preferred vendor neutral • Having a VM or Storage Management certification is preferred but is definitely not a deal breaker • “Certifications are always a nice to have. It definitely gets people noticed right away, but there are a lot of other skills that are equally important (if not more) like the ability to learn new things, works well on a team, takes initiative and gets things accomplished.”

  9. Bumps in the Road • Don’t try to do too much too soon • Not much wiggle room on a 2 year degree • ITIL – IT Best Practices • Advanced Linux and Microsoft Server courses • Convergence Technology • Utilized materials from CTC • Based on CompTIA Convergence Technology certification exam • CompTIA killed the exam • We decided to suspend the course before it was even launched • We may re-purpose this course as Unified Communications

  10. Convergence Technology Curriculum • Next up is Mobile App Development • Using course materials from last year’s Working Connections to launch this as a Special Topics course in Fall 2011 and again in Spring 2012 • Still need to do Job Skills Analysis to verify course has outcomes needed by local employers

  11. Milestones regarding MAD • Over 1 Million Apps currently available • Last year Smartphones exceeded PC sales • Tablets will surpass PC sales in < 3 years • Over 25 billion Apps downloaded to date • Over 44 billion Apps will be downloaded within the next 5 years

  12. Smartphone Sales Source: Nielsen (January 2012)

  13. Mobile App Development Curriculum

  14. Convergence Technology Curriculum • There has been enough growth in our program that we can now rollout a separate Convergence Technology certificate • Will be submitted this fall to the college curriculum committee • This will be followed up with a full CT degree • Have added Wireless Networking and HTI to our Computer Repair and Computer Support degrees • Wireless, VoIP, and HTI are now offered every semester

  15. CT Certificate of Completion • CODETITLE CREDIT HOURS • CITN 115 Home Technology Integration 5 • CITN 220 Cisco I 3 • CITN 222 Wireless Networking & Security 3 • CITN 225 Cisco II 3 • CITN 228 VoIP Fundamentals 3 • CITS 125 A+ Certification Prep 6 • Minimum Total:23 credit hours

  16. Convergence Tech Degree • 18 credits of General Ed core courses • Virtualization • VMware vSphere: Install, Configure, and Manage • Storage Management • EMC Information and Storage Management • EMC curriculum that prepares the student for the ISM certification exam • CompTIA Storage+ certification exam • CompTIA has partnered with the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) to develop an entry-level certification in Storage Management

  17. Convergence Tech Degree • Cloud Computing • EMC Cloud Infrastructure and Services – An advanced course that would require EMC Info and Storage Management to be a prerequisite course • Cloud Computing Essentials – This course would be based on the entry-level certification exam offered by CompTIA • The CompTIA Cloud Essentials specialty certification demonstrates that an individual knows what cloud computing means from a business and technical perspective, as well as what is involved in moving to and governing the cloud.

  18. Convergence Tech Degree • Enterprise Computing Basics – IBM • Intro to the Mainframe – Basics • This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to begin using the basic functionality of a mainframe computer. The course focuses on mainframe hardware, software, and programming techniques. • Intro to the Mainframe – Networking • This course provides a broad understanding of networking principles and the hardware and software components necessary to allow the mainframe to participate in a high volume data communications network.
