  2. Welcome to Third Grade! • We will introduce you to third grade and to our classrooms. • If you have any questions during our presentation, don’t hesitate to ask.

All About Maestra Hernandez • My background • Born in Jalisco, Mexico. • Come from a big family. • Grew up in San Rafael, CA. • Graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and SJSU with an MA. • My experience • Began teaching in 2009 as a Substitute Teacher. • Taught 3rd grade for 1 year and a half. • Have experience in dual language immersion schools such as River Glen, Sherman Oaks, Voices, and schools in the San Luis Obispo area, as well as experience with charter schools. • Excited to teach at Adelante as a 3rd grade Teacher with a great team!

All About Maestra Aragon • My background • I was born in Jalisco, raised in L.A. and San José. • I graduated from UC Riverside and National Hispanic University. • My experience • Taught as a substitute for 2 years: preschool – 8th grade. • Taught in the ALEGRIA dual immersion program . • 8 years of teaching experience in 3rd grade (1 year in a ¾ combo). • 4th year in Adelante teaching third grade.

  6. Our Goals for 3rd Grade • Language Arts: • DRA: Students should be reading at a level 38-40 in their DRA assessments in both languages. • Show progress of at least 1 grade level point in AR. • Fluency: Students should be reading at 137 cwpm in Spanish and in English.

  7. Our Goals for 3rd Grade Continued… • Writing:  Students will score a 3 or a 4 in the following writing areas: • Friendly/Formal Letter • Narrative Story: Beginning, middle, end (Details) • Expository: A full paragraph with at least 5 sentences that have an introduction, body and conclusion.

  8. Our Goals Continued… • Math: • Students should score 80% or more on quizzes and exams. • And all students should know their multiplication facts with automaticity 1-12.

  9. Our Goals Continued… • ELD: Move up at least one level in students CELDT Scores. • Homework: 100% of homework will be turned in complete and on time. Students may not be able to participate in our field trips or Fun Friday if too many homework assignments are missing.

  10. Class Subjects • The subjects we cover during third grade are: • Reading and writing– • Focus is still mostly Spanish, but we are introducing English reading and writing. • Math • Taught in Spanish. • Science and Social studies • Taught in English

Citations • *How to receive a citation? • get to red card in class • misbehave in cafeteria • misbehave on playground • * 1 citation –  Student may be sent to another classroom/office.  Phone call home.  Will not participate in Fun Friday for that month. • * 2 citations-  Principal /Teacher calls home.  Conference with parents to create a plan of action  In-house suspension  Will not be allowed to participate in upcoming activities, field trips, assemblies and/or after school enrichment. • * 3 citations-  Principal /Teacher calls home.  Conference with parents to create a plan of action  Out of school suspension  Will not be allowed to participate in upcoming activities, field trips, assemblies and/or after school enrichment.

  13. Homework • Generally Homework will be consistent between both teachers a few things will be different but this is what will be the same: • Reading: Read 30 minutes per day, log must be signed and it must be brought back to school daily. • Fluency: Weekly fluency will be assigned on Monday and collected the following Monday, but will be checked daily for signatures. • Spelling: Spelling homework will be given on Monday with the new words and will have to be turned in on Friday. • Math: Math homework will be given daily except on days that we test. • Additional worksheets or practice will be given based on students’ needs.

  14. Tardiness • School starts at 8:05 A.M. • If your child is not in line before we start the Pledge of Allegiance he/she will be marked tardy. If arrival is after 8:35, please report to the office first for tardy slip. • If students are tardy three times there will be consequences.

Field Trips • We do have some field trips planned for this year, some will be optional on weekends! • Ohlone Day in Deer Hollow on Saturday, October 20th from 1-4pm ($5). • Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" @ The Repertory Theater on Tuesday, December 4th. • Marine Science Institute in November/December • Stanford University in March • De Anza Planetarium ($5) via VTA • Tech Museum via VTA
