  2. Heredity • Heredity is all the traits and properties that are passed along biologically from both parents to child • Ex: hair color, eye color, body type, abilities • Tendencies toward specific diseases can also be inherited. (cancer, diabetes)

  3. Environment • Environment is the sum total of your surroundings-your family, where you grew up, where you live now, your experiences

  4. The 3 Aspects of Environment • Physical • Social • Cultural

  5. Physical Environment • Your physical surroundings can affect your life • Crime rate, air quality, presence of recreational facilities, community cleanliness, and access to medical care can affect your personal safety

  6. Social Environment • Includes parents and other people you have daily contact with. • Peers are people of the same age who share similar range of interests. • Depending on the people you hang around determines whether you have positive or negative peer pressure.

  7. Cultural Environment • Culture is the collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group. • Ex: ethnic group, community, nation • Parts of culture include: language, traditions, religion

  8. Behavior- Your Behavior, Your Health • Although you have little or no control over your heredity and environment, you have a great deal of control over your behavior. • By becoming health literate, you can take positive action to protect your health and the health of others.
