  2. Rethinking digital preservation • Mission is still the same: to preserve the important digital assets of UC • Curation instead of preservation • Curation is an outcome, not a repository • Includes access, document schedules, versioning, migration, other archival practices • Technology change is inevitable; it should be built into curation services CDL Users Council

  3. Curation Micro-services, I • A break from traditional model of comprehensive digital repository • A series of independent yet interoperable tools to manage digital objects • Will allow for more flexible systems; can respond quickly to changes CDL Users Council

  4. Curation Micro-services, II • Exchange new implementation of micro-service without having to re-engineer entire system • Can allow us to push tools out to endusers • We hope it results in a system that is more responsive to endusers’ needs CDL Users Council

  5. Identity Storage Verification Replication Cataloging Characterization Ingest Indexing Search Transformation Publication Annotation Curation Micro-services, III CDL Users Council

  6. Use cases • Libraries, museums, archives seeking to preserve their digital collections • Faculty member preserving course materials and personal archive • Researchers fulfilling grant requirements to archive data CDL Users Council

  7. Current status, I • Currently in development • Starting with identity, storage, ingest and replication services • Hope to have pilot in operation by June 09 • Materials in current DPR will be migrated into new repository CDL Users Council

  8. Current status, II • Charging for storage for UC campuses, starting in FY 09/10 • Charging for storage only • $1500/TB/year • Fees discounted 50% 1st year, 25% second year • We expect storage costs to drop • Considering costs for clients outside UC; hope to have at least a pilot program in the next few months.
