  3. STATES OF MATTER1. SOLIDS • Particles of solids are tightly packed, vibrating about a fixed position. • Solids have a definite shape and a definite volume.

  4. STATES OF MATTER2. LIQUID • Particles of liquids are tightly packed, but are far enough apart to slide over one another. • Liquids have an indefinite shape and a definite volume.

  5. STATES OF MATTER3. GAS • Particles of gases are very far apart and move freely. • Gases have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume.

  7. STATES OF MATTER4.PLASMA • A plasma is a gas with a charge. • Good conductor of electricity. • Indefiniteshape and an indefinite volume. • Plasma is the most common state of matter in our universe.

  12. STATES OF MATTER5. Bose-Einstein Condensate • At incredibly low temperatures needed atoms lose their individual identities and merge into a single blob. • AKA: a "super atom"

  13. Pure Substance • Chemically combined/bonded • Have fixed composition • Water is always H2O • 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen • Properties that always stay the same • Pure water always freezes at 0°celsius • Sugar alwaysoccurs as a crystal

  14. Pure Substance • Elements • Made of the same type of atom • Ex: Carbon A chunk of carbon One carbon atom

  15. Pure Substance • Compounds • Made of atoms from 2 or more elements that are DIFFERENT from each other • Carbon Dioxide + + Oxygen + Carbon + Oxygen

  16. Mixtures • Physically combined. • Made of 2 or more pure substances • Kool Aid is made of water, sugar, and flavoring…all pure substances.

  17. Homogeneous Mixtures • Prefix Homo- means the same • The composition (chemical make up) of the mixture is the samethroughout. • If I take a sample at the top, it should have the same chemical make up as the bottom.

  18. Homogeneous Mixtures • Examples: • Sugar water • Cough syrup

  19. Heterogeneous Mixture • Prefix Hetero- means different • The mixture isn’t mixed well or evenly distributed. • If you let the mixture sit, it will separate out.
