  7. Implementation Plan DB2 V8 Implementation Strategy • Phase I – Compatibility Mode • No new functions available. • Structured Query Language “order by” will now be done in Unicode, which will return rows in which the first 128 code points happen to match the first 128 code points of ASCII (numbers first). Hence, Unicode has a different collating sequence than EBCDIC. Also be aware that upper case comes before lower case. • Testing of new code base against current applications. Must be an extensive test prior to moving to Enable New Function Mode. Estimated time for this phase is three months.

  8. Implementation Plan DB2 V8 Implementation Strategy • Phase II – Enable New Function Mode • New functions become available. • Once in Enable New Function Mode, returning to compatibility mode is not an option. • Query Management Facility (QMF) will be moved to Enable New Function Mode at the same time. • Will remain in Enable New Function Mode for a very short period of time one to two days.

  9. Implementation Plan DB2 V8 Implementation Strategy • Phase III - New Function Mode • Subsystem is moved to New Function Mode, thereby completing the migration Version 8.

  10. Implementation Plan Tech Support Implementation Plan • A new method to upgrade subsystems will require an additional set of libraries. This will allow the test systems to be migrated to a new version and allow testing by our clients while keeping production running on the current version. • This change will be coordinated through the DBAs . • New additional panel choices for QMF and Spufi(DB2I) will be available and must be used for the testing environment.

  11. Implementation Plan FYI • The minimum requirement for DB2 Connect is DB2 Connect 8.2 FP10. • COBOL – Per John Campbell at IBM: “Existing COBOL load modules will run unchanged, but should be re-linked under LE. If a module is changed, then it will need to be compiled under Enterprise COBOL as it will have to run through the DB2 V8 Precompiler.”

  12. Reference Material • IBM Guides • SQL • Utility Guide and Reference • Migration Information • Release and Planning • Technical Preview

  13. Reference Material (continued) Additional Guides • DB2 UDB for z/OS Version 8 – Planning for Migration • DB2 UDB for z/OS Version 8 - The Migration Process, Including Tips and Hints Along the Way • DB2 UDB for z/OS Version 8 – Everything You Ever Wanted to Know,….
