The Life of Christ (9) Jesus Turns Water Into Wine Scripture John 2:1–11 (NASB95) 1On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” 4And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” 5His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” 6Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. 7Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. 8And He said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it to him. 9When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom, 10and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.” 11This beginning of His signs (attesting miracle) Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. 4. The Life of Christ (9) Jesus Turns Water Into Wine • It appears that Mary had some involvement (we do not know how much) in the wedding feast and was responsible for Jesus being invited. V1, 2 • One of the principle features of a wedding at that time was a feast. • The wine running out meant a disruption of the feast and would have been considered a disgrace for those who were providing the feast. V3 • Mary turns to her son for help in resolving the problem. V3 • Jesus’ response indicates there was more to her motives than one might think. V4 • Mary was not clear on Jesus’ true identity (the God/Man) and apparently wanted Jesus to use this as an occasion to show off His glory. • Jesus’ words are a rebuke designed to indicate that He would not tolerate his mother giving Him orders, or attempting to show Him off to others. • His response also has the idea that this is none of our business and this wedding is not our responsibility. 6. The Life of Christ (9) Jesus Turns Water Into Wine • His use of the word “Woman” to address her indicates His displeasure. V4 • Mary recognizes His authority and instructs the servants that things will be done His way. V5 • His first miracle was performed in such a way that eyewitnesses were sure of its authenticity. • Jesus instructs the servants to fill six stone water pots with water; He then turns the water into wine. V7, 9 • This in is real alcoholic wine, not new or unfermented wine, or else there would be no point the statement made by the headwaiter. V10 • The good wine was served first so it could be enjoyed before the senses were dulled. V10 The Life of Christ (9)

The Life of Christ (9) Jesus Turns Water Into Wine • This miracle was primarily for the benefit of His disciples as seen in the statement at the end of verse 11. • However, like many of Jesus’ miracles, there is also the underlying reality that He was meeting a need and was benefitting those around Him. • The “Believed” in verse 11 does not refer to saving faith (cf. Jn. 1:50) but to the disciples being strengthened in their existing faith by means of this miracle. • Verse 11 indicates that this was the first of his public, attesting miracles; John records exactly seven of these in his gospel. • These miracles were designed to authenticate His claim of being the Messiah.
