Adolescent assessment • Each LSOA has around 300 children (0-15 year olds) • We will recruit 60 adolescents in each area = 60 x 40 = 2400 pupils • 30 11-13 year olds • 30 14-16 year olds • Equal distribution of males and females • Assessment to take place in school classroom • Combine with Accelerometer data • Baseline assessment to take place now • Follow up assessment in same schools in 3-4 years

  9. The survey • Home family background • Physical activity • Sedentary behaviour • Psychological wellbeing • Safety and environment • Diet • Creative activities • Physical Health • Based on standardised measures • ¾ hour to fill in • All pupils will get £5 voucher

Procedure • Establish which schools are most likely to take pupils from LSOAs (could be up to 3 per LSOA = 3 x 40 = 120) • Establish contacts with schools • Ascertain which pupils at the school are from target/control LSOA areas • Send out permission letters to parents • Administer survey to children • Recruit subsample for accelerometer assessment • Send CBCL to parents (translated where necessary)

School’s time commitment • Initial meeting with head or delegated staff (½ hour) • Staff member to find names and addresses on database (½ hour) • Meet with pupils to explain study (½ hour) • Distribute permission letters (½ hour) • Forward permission letters (½ hour) • Meet with pupils to administer survey (1 hour) • Meet with pupils to outline findings (½ hour) Total work from school = 4 hours
