  1. Investigative Journalism Partnership The Investigative Journalism Partnership is dedicated to improving the scope and overall quality of independent investigative reporting in Bangladesh.   Our offer to successful applicants is to provide expertise and other resources in the production of quality investigative journalism and to develop new formats for investigative journalism.

  2. Investigative Journalism What will the readers and/or viewers get?

  3. Developing the newsroom • Placing an experienced regional or international investigative journalist with a newsroom for a longer period; to mentor and train the IJ reporters while doing research and production of an agreed IJ story/stories • Reorganisation of newsrooms to better support the direct production of investigative journalism stories • Coaching of management and staff to implement new editorial structures, routines and procedures to better support the direct production of investigative journalism stories • Training/mentoring by regional and international colleagues on new methods and IT-programmes for investigative journalism, related to data journalism, databases, crowdsourcing etc to develop an IJ story.

  4. Format • Support to new IJ formats. Assistance can be provided by developing ideas, formats, and connections with media and experts in other countries that have introduced similar formats.

  5. Research skills • Support to assist in producing a particular story or a series on investigative reporting, including introducing new methods for quality investigative journalism • Capacity building in methodology for quality investigative journalism • Capacity building on how to cover thematic areas such as environment, gender based violence, labour rights, corruption and climate change/environment through supporting IJ stories in those areas.

  6. International Networks • Networking with leading centres and networks for investigative, such as the Global Investigative Journalism Network and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists to develop IJ ideas. • Collaborate with investigative journalist in other countries to maintain cross boarder investigations

  7. Information and analyse • Introduce methods to use expertise outside the newsroom for doing investigative journalism, e.g. engineers to evaluate the strength of buildings and, chemists to assesswaterquality etcetera. • Background information to a story e.g. access to databases, wallraff , entrance fees.

  8. Marketing IJ • Marketing of investigative journalism stories, including training/mentoring for marketing staff, based on promoting a certain story/series of stories. • Coaching on how to use social media to promote/communicate investigative reporting, based on promoting a certain story/series of stories. • Coaching on new methods/channels to increase profits due to investigative reporting: crowd sourcing, international funds/donors, alliances with other media organisations or other actors in the private sector, organising events and digital campaigns etc based on published or coming IJ stories. • Integrating investigative reporting into the media houses business plans, exploring different ways of making investigative reporting profitable business as a part of developing IJ publishing.

  9. Safe and Security • Legal advise on how to manage sensitive investigative stories • Safety and security training of individual journalists; news rooms and media houses as part of a sensitive investigation. • Developing safety manuals and procedures for media houses when the risk mitigation demands it. • Capacity building on Conflict Sensitive Reporting related to the direct production of agreed investigative journalism stories. • Capacity building on Gender Sensitive Reporting related to the direct production of agreed investigative journalism stories.

We will not support • Academic studies or research • Arranging of conferences • Projects not leading to the production and publication of qualitative investigative journalism • The partnership mechanism will not transfer cash to any partner • Salaries or any compensation to individual journalists or staff inside the media houses

  11. Range of support • The range of the support provided by the partnership programme is dependent on the amount of resources and effort the applicant is contributing with. • The partnership approved in this call can continue until the end of March 2018 • The support for one application can be of maximum 50 working days of international experts or other support in the same range. The details is settled during the planning period

  12. Process

  13. Decisions and confidentiality • The information will only be shared within a small senior team in Fojo and MRDI. • Fojo Media Institute will make the final decisions, in close consultation with the MRDI project team. • Before making final decisions Fojo will present the list of applicant and headline of the proposed applications to the Swedish Embassy in Dhaka for their feedback and understanding.
