ARINC’s Case Study • 1983 - 2001 Owned and operated 17 trunked radio systems for airport and airline operations in US. • Motorola Smartnet System – upgraded in 2000 to type II capability • Typically 5-10 channels with 1000 – 3000 users at each location. Prior to 9/11 some sites were blocking at nearly 40% during peak times. • No data capability – Airport ramp operations need data applications to improve efficiency. • No networking of sites – Airport to Airport communication identified as a desired feature. • Mix of Micor and Quantar repeaters – ARINC’s maintenance costs were increasing. Aeronautical Frequency Coordinator for 75 years
