  1. Is there evidence of synergism in traditional medicinal plants? Jimoh Adeleke Economic Botany Feb 7, 2008.

  2. Brief history *oldest form of health care * primitive man, native people * observation of plants and wild animals * trial and error * used in healing rituals and as traditional medicines

  3. Uses of herbal medicine ~ Respiratory problems (asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, etc.) ~ Skin problem such as acne ~ Anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia ~ 80% of the population of developing countries still use herbal medicines for primary health care

  4. Administration * Boiling and Soaking of crude material * Direct from food stores * Extracts * Capsules and tablets * Combination of various plants

  5. Commonly used medicinal plants in Nigeria Uvaria pista – Used for Insomnia, Epilepsy, Neuralgia, and Hysteria Enantia clorantha – Used as antidotes for rheumatism and arthritis. Also used for healing wounds and scurvy diesease Vernomia amygdalina – Used to purify the blood and adjust pH intensity in the body system.

  6. Does synergism really occur in herbal medicines? * Placebo Effect *Commonly known Usage * Increase in potency of phytochemicals * Or is it just redundancy?

  7. Plants tested to work togther * Enantia Chlorantha, Voacanya Africana, and Ranitidine –showed enhanced anti-ulcer activities * Berberine fremontii and 5’ methoxyhydnocarpin (5’ MHC)

  8. Figure 1: A model of synergistic action of berberine and an MDR inhibitor that are both produced by B. fremontii. Berberine accumulates in the cell driven by the membrane potential. The NorA pump extrudes berberine. The MDR inhibitor 5′-MHC blocks the NorA pump, potentiating the antibiotic action of berberine.

  9. Examples

  10. ?Questions? Could synergism be the solution to resistant microbes and complex dieseases? Or is it mere placebo effect in more cases?
