  3. Standards for Writing • Focus on an event that had personal or historical meaning • Answer the five W’s thoroughly • Create a sense of immediacy using precise language and sensory images • Present events in a clear and logical order • Capture the mood of the event

  4. Event Ideas… • An election • A funeral of significance • A natural disaster • A sports event • Someone standing up to a bully • Another significant personal memory • Pretend to be a witness at a historical event (Needs some research)

  5. Where to start… GET THE FACTS Use a chart/graphic organizer to record basic facts CAPTURE THE MOOD Sensory details and vivid images will help you capture the mood. Think about sights, sounds, smells, tastes and textures you experienced RECORD WHAT IS SAID Direct quotations can give the reader a sense of being at the event REFLECT TO GIVE SIGNIFICANCE Reflect on what happens and why it is important to you or others. Make sure you let your readers know the significance.

  6. Grading Your grade will be graded using the common rubric for written language. This paper will count as one test grade.
