  4. Session 4 – Staying Quit Handling strong urges months or years after quitting • Review your reasons for quitting • There’s not such a thing of “just one cigarette” • Ride out the desire to smoke. It will pass • Avoid alcohol • Manage weight by eating healthy and exercising

  5. Session 4 – Recovering From Slips What do you do if you have a cigarette? • A slip is a one-time corrected mistake • A relapse is going back to smoking • The difference between a slip and relapse is within your control.

  6. Session 4 – Mental Rehearsal Effective strategy to use in situations that tempt you to smoke. • Mentally preparing for touch situations • Relaxation imagery technique

  7. Session 4 – Mental Rehearsal • Imagine yourself in two different tough situations • Think about how you will cope in each situation to avoid smoking

  8. Session 4 – Special Concerns Weight Gain • Weight gain is usually small • It is healthier to quit smoking then gain a few pounds • Stressing about weight gain can make quitting more difficult • Try walking and eating healthy

  10. Session 4 – Take Care of Yourself • Inform health care professionals about previous or present tobacco use • Arrange for preventative screenings and check-ups • Notify doctor of signs or changes in body

Session 4 –Tips to Stay Quit • Review your Freshstart materials regularly • Inquire about quitlines • Carry your reasons for quitting • Spend more time in places that you can’t smoke • Save cigarette money to reward yourself • Get your teeth cleaned and whitened • Share your sense of pride with others • Start a new hobby • Make your quit date an anniversary and celebrate • Remove anything that reminds you of smoking

  12. Session 4 – Summary • Stay quit by using the same strategies used to handle withdrawal • A slip is not a relapse • Mental rehearsal helps to prepare and visualize success in tough situations • Benefits are immediate and long term • Take care of yourself and communicate with your doctors
