The Impact of ICT: Destructive, Distractive, and Productive Use

ICT, the convergence of audio-visual, telephone, and computer networks, has both negative and positive effects. Wrong use, like indulging in social media and exam malpractice, leads to counter-productivity and risks for students. However, when used productively, ICT enhances knowledge, global awareness, and skills, leading to improved academic performance and job prospects.

  2. What is ICT? • The term ICT is used to refer to the convergence of audio-visual and telephone networks with computer networks through a single cabling or link system (Moursund, 2005).

  3. Wrong Use of ICT • 1. Indulgence on Social Media • 2. Obsession with gadgets • 3. Employment of gadgets as tools for examination malpractice

  4. Downsides Resulting from the Wrong Use of ICT i. Counter-productivity especially when students refuse to employ the new media in broadening their knowledge horizon ii. Poor academic performance of students particularly those who get addicted iii. Surge in the number of youngsters on social media who interface with unscrupulous persons that can introduce them to the online fraud bandwagon popularly known as “yahoo-yahoo”.

  5. Downsides Resulting from the Wrong Use of ICT (Contd.) iv. Increase in the risk of juveniles getting exposed to pornography and acts of violence displayed so often on the mass media.

  6. Benefits Derived from ICT • 1. The world has become a global village • 2. People have become more technologically adept • 3. Information is more readily available • 4. Organizations can function more optimally

  7. Productive Use of ICT • This comes to bear when ICT is used positively. • This can include the use of ICT to: • 1. broaden one’s knowledge horizon • 2. keep one’s self abreast with events happening around the globe • 3. acquire the latest skills and expertise in a field through such fora as YouTube

  8. Results of Using ICT Productively • 1. Better chances at improving one’s academic performance • 2. Makes one more technologically savvy • 3. Provides better job opportunities • 4. Makes one more knowledgeable and relevant in one’s chosen field of expertise
