  1. LDAP Search is the friend you need! Do you feel any configuration task inLDAP like a never-ending battle which always end up with a defeat? Don’t worry, let me introduce a friend, LDAP Search. LDAP Search is an LDAP command-line tool which can reduce your task exponentially. They work with LDAP configuring app such as Splunk. LDAP Search authenticates against LDAP and allows you to test out your configuration from the basic command line. Once that is cleared, it also helps in the implementation of the configuration. You can also use the tool to troubleshoot problems with your configuration. Normally, IDAP Search is run by the LDAP administrator. The IDAP Search command work like a yes or no tool. If the values that you can enter in the command are right, then the tool returns a version of your values which you can use in the LDAP server search. However, if the values are wrong, then you either receive nothing or an error message which tell you which value is incorrect. This message generally displays a bad hostname or incorrect password. The most important things that you need to remember about your LDAP server are its IP address or hostname, base DN and the LDAP port number. However, if you don’t remember any of these, even LDAP Search can’t help you in your task. You can retrieve this information by contacting the IT department or someone in your company who manages the LDAP server.

  2. LDAP Search is the friend you need! Connecting and searching LDAP servers LDAP Search is used to retrieve partial and complete information from an LDAP server. For example, you want to send an email to a client but doesn’t know the full name. You can do an LDAP Search for Common Names (CNs) to auto-complete either the full name or the email address. To perform an LDAP Search, you need to do the following: ● ● Connect to the LDAP server Then you are authenticated against the LDAP server so that you have the permission to search. This is called binding. You can bind against an LDAP server by entering a specify DN and password. Note: A DN and a password can be used to bind in the LDAP server. However, some other combination of DN and password which are stored to authenticate other system users on the LDAP server. Features of LDAP Search: You also need to enter a specify DN to concentrate the search to a particular part of the server. This DN is known as Base Distinguished Name. For example, ou=people, dc=megacorp, dc=com. You can also specify how deep you want to search for anything in a server. This is called level searching. For example, searching just the name entry, i.e., BaseObject, or entire sub-level below a base DN. You can also specify what kind of entry you want to search for. This is called a filter search. You can enter a word, and the server will look for only that specific word in the entire LDAP server. Theldap search tool has four types of options: ● Common Options:This lets the user control the binding and general behavior of the LDAP search command. For instance, using “-h” to specify hostname or “-p” to specify the port number. Input and Output Options:This option lets the user decide how he wants to sort and present the result of LDAP Search. LDAP Controls Options:This is an advanced search option for server-side sorting, virtual lists, and tenacious searches. ● ●

  3. LDAP Search is the friend you need! ● SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Options:This option allows the user to use an LDAP server to establish a secure connection for the search.
