  1. Mission Statement Through a dedicated commitment from students, parents, staff and the entire community, the mission of North Palos School District 117 is to create a positive caring, learning environment, which fosters excellence and active student participation and to ensure that every student will realize his/her full potential as a socially responsible lifelong learner.

  2. Class Goals • To determine how each student learns • To further each student’s understanding of vocabulary, writing, and grammar conventions. • To challenge each student to think more critically and read more efficiently

  3. Mrs. Nowicki’s Experience • Seventh year in District 117 • Graduated from Northern Illinois University with a BA in History in 2000 • Earned a Master’s in Literacy with a concentration in Reading in 2008

  4. Ms. Theodore’s Experience • Seventh year in District 117 • Graduated from Illinois State University with a BS in Special Education, with certification as a Learning Behavior Specialist • Earned a Masters Degree in Reading, with certification as a Reading Specialist from Concordia Chicago University in 2009

  5. Grading Scale and Classwork • All homework is to be done in a timely manner. • All homework should be an example of the student’s best work. • All work will be given a point value. • All homework should have a proper heading and be written in black or blue ink. A 100 – 93 B 92 – 86 C 85 – 78 D 77 – 70 F 69 – 0

  6. Classwork continued … • Missing work • Make-up work is the student’s responsibility. • Assignments and tests will be made up the day after student returns to school. They will have a grace period of 1 day for every day they are absent. • Every single missing assignment is a detention. This will ensure the assignment gets finished and does not affect the final grade.

Students are placed in Assets based on data • Data is reviewed quarterly • Students who qualify will be given a permission letter this week Please return the permission slip immediately so that students’ schedules and busing can be arranged • Assets begins the week of September 12: 2:30-3:45 Free bussing is provided. Some students will be attending Reading assets 4 days a week, some 3, and others 2 –this is all based on need. • Attendance is important! • Word Study • Direct instruction/computer practice • Assessment at end of session • If your child is absent from Assets, parents MUST call 233-4500 and let the office know!!!! ASSETS

  8. Tardies B.26 TARDIES –page 13 in Conrady Student-Parent Handbook Social responsibility is a part of our school’s mission. Being on time to class promotes efficiency and minimizes disruptions. Students who are up to 2 minutes late without a valid pass will be considered tardy (more than 2 minutes late will be considered truancy). Being late is defined as either not being in the classroom or in assigned seat when the tardy bell rings, depending on the established expectation of the classroom teacher. The following is the established Tardy Policy and applies per class, per quarter:  1st Tardy = Verbal Warning  2nd Tardy = Required Written Response  3rd Tardy = After-School Dean’s Detention  4th Tardy = 2-Hour Saturday Detention  5th Tardy = 3-Hour Saturday Detention  6th + Tardy = 3-Hour Saturday Detention and Suspension from Extra- Curricular Activities and privileges until student has not been tardy to any class for a period of 5 school days.

  10. Independent Reading Time (IRT) • Students need to have an IRT book with them everyday at school! No book = detention • Students are required (as part of their grade) to be reading everyday. They will be issued every month a reading record. They must indicate the number of minutes and books they have read for the month. Please do not sign/initial the record if they are not actually reading. • The book that they are reading in school needs to be the same book they are reading for their reading record.
