  1. Raised to Live A New LifeRomans 6:1-14 • Happy Easter! • 5 Truths that your life and death and hope depend on: • Christ Died For Our Sin • Christ Was Raised From The Dead • Christ Will Never Die Again • We Are United With Christ And Die With Him • We Are Raised With Him To Live In Newness of Life

  2. 1. Christ Died For Our Sin • Romans 6:4,10 [ESV] - We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death…For the death he died he died to sin, once for all.” • Historical fact: Christ died and was buried. • He died for a purpose. • He died to give His perfect life in exchange for our broken lives. • S.I.N.  Selfish Independent Nature • Result: a broken relationship with God

  3. God provided a way for our broken relationship with Him to be restored again. • Christ Died for Our Sin • 2. Christ Was Raised From The Dead • Romans 6:4,9 [ESV] – “…Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father …We know that Christ, being raised from the dead… • The joy of Easter is the EMPTY TOMB! • The power of the resurrection demonstrated that Christ conquered both sin and death.

  4. 1 Corinthians 15: 12-14 - But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. • Our faith is based on the Truth – the Reality that Christ rose from the dead.

  5. 3. Christ Will Never Die Again • Romans 6:9 [ESV] - We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. • Examples of those raised from the dead: • Son of the Widow of Zarephath – 1 Kings 17:22 • Jairus’ daughter – Luke 8:52-56 • Lazarus (dead for four days) – John 11 • Dorcas– Acts 9 • All of these people died again. • Christ will NEVER die again.

  6. Death no longer has power over Him • 1 Corinthians 15: 54-56 [NIV] - “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” • “Where Oh death, is your victory? Where O death, is your sting?” • The sting of death is sin…But thanks be to God. He gives us the victory… • “…through our Lord Jesus Christ.” • Christ died for your sin… but He was raised from the dead and has conquered death. • We can be confident that we too, will one day be raised to life through faith in Christ

  7. When You Are United With Christ, • You Die With Him • Romans 6:5 [ESV] - For if we have been united with him in a death like his. • “united with Christ” by faith, trust in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sin. God’s Holy Spirit comes to live inside of you and you receive a new identity. • We are called to die to our old self - our old way of living

  8. Romans 6:6,7,10 [ESV] - We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin… So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin.” • When we are united with Christ, sin no longer has to have control of us •  we no longer need to let our sinful nature dictate how we behave.

  9. Ephesians 4: 22-24 [ESV] – “…put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” • Sin no longer characterizing our behavior.

  10. You Are Raised With Him To Live • In Newness of Life • When we are identified with Christ through faith we are also raised with Him. • Romans 6:4, [ESV] - We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. • His resurrection gives us hope for the future • But this is a hope we can live in NOW!

  11. Ephesians 4: 24-29 [NLT] - Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil. If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need. Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

  12. We died to sin – now we are called to live for God not for ourselves. • A transformation has taken place! • Baptism symbolizes this transformation: • Romans 6:3,4 [ESV] – Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. • Historians agree that the mode of baptism of the early church was immersion.

  13. Greek word – baptizomeans “to submerge or immerse in water” • Baptism pictures our identification with Christ’s death, burial and resurrection. • Easter is a time to be reminded to live in this new life we have been given in Christ. • The power of the resurrection is the power we possess to overcome our sin and live now for God’s glory -- to serve His purposes.

  14. Too many Christians are “betweeners”: they live between Egypt and Canaan, saved but never satisfied; or they live between Good Friday and Easter, believing in the Cross but not entering into the power and glory of the Resurrection. Romans 6:5 indicates that our union with Christ assures our future resurrection should we die. But Romans 6:4 teaches that we share His resurrection power today. “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above.... For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God”(Col. 3:1, 3,niv). (W. Wiersbe)

  15. Let’s renew our commitment to live the new life we were raised with Christ to walk in: • Romans 6:13 [NLT] - Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.
