  1. CVC-OEI The Brave New World of Online Instruction

  2. Who is CVC-OEI and why should you care? • Created in 2014-15 state budget • Stated purpose was to “expand the delivery of courses through technology” • Formed an advisory committee in 2014 which included all constituent groups • One early goal was a common statewide course management system (CCMS) • Chose Canvas after extensive vetting process….and pays for it • Continued and expanded faculty development options • Also introduced student support applications (the “Ecosystem”) – Cranium Café, Quest for Success, Proctorio, NameCoach, and NetTutor

  3. Rubrics • CVC-OEI developed the course design rubric that the Academic Senate has advised using to assess the quality of your courses • A DE program rubric is being discussed as a tool to aid colleges in developing robust local DE programs

  4. Please Note: • We are not the Online College!!!! • We exist to support the 114 California community colleges

  5. Why Access to Online Ed Matters Nationally, online enrollment continues to grow while overall college enrollment declines. In the past, community colleges attracted the majority of their online learners from a 100-mile radius. That average has shrunk to less than half of a college’s online students living within 100 miles (Inside Higher Ed).

  6. Online Course Success Rate Comparison OEI Aligned Course Sections vs. Statewide 62.5% CVC-OEI Rubric Aligned Sections Consortium Colleges Overall Statewide Overall Data Source: CCCCO’s Data Mart for all credit, internet-based courses, matched on the same TOP code. OEI pilot data based on data voluntarily submitted by pilot colleges and does not include ALL OEI pilot sections.

  7. Success and Retention Rate Trends

  8. Over 7,000 online course sections across 56 consortium colleges 75 featured ADTs with a fully online pathway, from 26 different colleges Integration of SIS enrollment, Promise Grant, and payment

  9. Finish Faster Online May 2018 – March 2019 Data • More than 23,000 online sections; nearly half badged for quality or services • 3,323 completed applications which resulted in at least one enrollment (1,916 from summer) – top five: • Coastline Community College • Foothill College • College of the Canyons • San Bernardino Valley College • Santiago Canyon College

  10. Finish Faster Online Top Three Reasons For Enrollment • Finish transfer requirements CSU/UC • Find classes unavailable at home school • Finish AA/Certification requirements Most Popular Courses • Statistics • Calculus • English Composition • Oral Communication • Any science with a lab component

  11. Course Finder: cvc.edu

  12. How can your classes be included? • Send us your summer schedule information by 4/30/19 –cvc.edu/course-finder-csv-instructions/ • We will resend instructions on the CIO listserv • If you send a URL, your information will stay up to date AND we will include your fall sections

  13. Improving Online CTE Pathways grant • CVC-OEI is administering a $35 million competitive grant to improve or create short-term online CTE pathways and/or build bridges for students from the Online College to our own programs • The vast majority of colleges expressed interest through Letters of Intent that were submitted in March • The proposals are due on May 1, 2019 • The grant has a one-year timeline for college to show that they can make significant progress in student success and completion of CTE degrees preparing them for the workforce

  14. Augmentation Grant Goals • Develop online programs and courses that lead to short-term, industry-valued credentials or • Enable a student in a pathway developed by the California Online Community College to continue his or her education in a career pathway offered by an existing community college.

  15. Help us help you • “As a CIO with a million demands, why should I EVER spend time thinking about CVC-OEI or going to the cvc.edu website? Come on.” • Pragmatically, your college’s FTES growth and increase in Funding Formula numbers (like completion) rest on the health of your online programs • Everyone wants to improve the quality of their online courses and support services, which we know leads to greater success for students • CVC-OEI provides rubrics, professional development, online apps, Canvas courses with OER materials, and more to help online programs

  16. Help us help your students • Statistics show that we are not currently reaching the older, working population in the state, particularly men • Working with employers to develop programs and grant credit would likely attract this population • CPL (credit for prior learning) would particularly benefit these prospective students and attract them to our online programs

  17. Input into the 2019-2020 Workplan • CVC-OEI will be developing its next workplan later this month • What activities/goals will help your local online program grow stronger and have better results for students?
