  1. This is a photograph of Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón (most frequently referred to as Frida Kahlo) and the pain the she endured after a nearly fatal street car accident. This photo was taken by Juan Guzmán, photographer. Frida was born on July 6th, 1907, and died on July 13, 1954 from a pulmonary embolism. • A hand rail pierced her abdomen and her uterus. confining Frida to wearing a plaster corset that restricted her to her hospital bed. She had a lot of time in seclusion, which sparked the idea behind most of her paintings, which were self-portraits.

  3. What is the intended purpose? • The intended purpose for Juan Guzmán’s photograph is to show the pain and seculsion Frida endured following her accident. Also, it shows how she implemented a skill; painting, to help her overcome the emotional hardship she faced.

How does this photo appeal to Ethos? • This photograph appeals to ethos because Juan Guzmán spoke to Frida Kahlo personally about her accident. • How does this photograph appeal to pathos? • This photograph appeals to pathos because it makes you feel pain for Frida and an emotional tie to her hardship as she recovered • How does this photo appeal to Logos? • This photograph appeals to logos because Juan Guzmán is an exceptional photographer, and Frida Kahlo is an iconic artist.

  5. What techniques are used in this photograph? • This photo is in black and white so that it doesn’t draw attention to one part of the photograph, but you see it as a whole. • Frida is depicted here in her hospital bed, painting intricate shapes and designs on her body cast.

  6. What message, point of view, and/or emotion does this image portray? • This photo conveys hope because it shows Frida at her lowest point, doing the only thing she can do exceptionally.

  7. How might a wider angle have changed the message of the image? • A wider angle would have most likely taken the focus off of Frida, making the hope portrayed less effective.

  8. How would the message of the image be changed if it were zoomed to the center? • If the photo were zoomed in, you would not be able to recognize that this is a woman, much less a hopeful woman restricted by a body cast.

  9. What opinions might people form as a result of viewing this image? • This photo could pull at one’s heartstrings for those who know Frida’s history. • This photo could inspire one with willpower from learning about her hardships and how she overcame them by integrating passion.
