  1. KIDNEYS PHYSIOLOGY AND PKD

  2. What do the Kidneys do? • Filter blood plasma, separate /eliminate wastes • Regulate blood volume and pressure • Regulate body fluids • Secrete enzymes that: • control blood pressure • electrolyte balance • oxygen carrying capacity of blood

  3. HOW DOES THE KIDNEY CONVERT BLOOD PLASMA INTO URINE? • GLOMERULAR FILTRATION • TUBULAR REABSORPTION /SECRETION • WATER CONSERVATION

  4. INSIDE THE KIDNEY

  5. CROSS SECTION OF KIDNEY AND INTERNAL FLOW

  6. NORMAL KIDNEY You can distinguish between the pyramids and medulla, and that they each have a renal pelvis

  7. POLYCYSTIC KIDNEY Here it is indistinguishable. The cysts have destroyed much of the tissue

  8. ACCURATE SIZE COMPARISON • Side by side comparison of a normal kidney and a polycystic kidney • The polycystic kidney can grow even bigger and need to be removed if affects other organs

  9. WHAT IS PKD????? • POLYCYSTIC KIDNEY DISEASE • GENETIC DISEASE • AFFECTS MORE THEN 600,000 PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES/ 12.5 MILLION WORLD WIDE • NOT GENDER SPECIFIC • CAN GO UNDIAGNOSED FOR YEARS • HAS NO CURE

  10. TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF PKD • Autosomal Dominant • Most common inherited syndrome • Indicates one parent has the disease • 50% chance will be passed to offspring • Affects 1 in 500 newborns • 10% is spontaneous

  11. TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF PKD • AutosomalRecessive • Caused by a mutation in gene called PKHD1 • Both parents would need to pass this gene to offspring – 25% chance • kidney failure before adulthood, death

  12. SYMPTOMS AND EFFECTS • HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE • HEADACHES • ANEURYSMS • BACK AND SIDE PAIN • BLOOD IN THE URINE • UTI’S • KIDNEY STONES • RENAL FAILURE • DIALYSIS

  13. DIAGNOSING POLYCYSTIC KIDNEY DISEASE • ULTRA SOUND IMAGING OF KIDNEYS • CT OR MRI • FAMILY MEDICAL HISTORY • GENETIC TESTING

  14. TREATMENT FOR PKD PATIENTS • MEDICATION FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE • ANTIBIOTICS FOR INFECTIONS • SURGERY: TRANSPLANT OR PAIN MANAGEMENT • DIALYSIS • LOW SALT/PROTEIN • HIGH FIBER • LIMIT CAFFEINE INTAKE

  15. HOW DO WE HELP FIND A CURE? WWW.PKDCURE.ORG -ADVOCACY -CLINICAL TRIALS -RAISE AWARENESS -JOIN YOUR LOCAL CHAPTER
