  9. COMMUNITY SERVICE • For students participating in extra-curricular activities: • Each hour of practice, such as band, JROTC, sports, chess competitions etc., students may earn one hour of community service, up to a total of 20 hours.

  10. PARENTS: WHAT TO EXPECT • Transition from middle school can be a shock. Our curriculum is not driven by the FCAT. It emphasizes critical thinking, writing, analyzing information and application. Many of our students become overwhelmed at first. Encourage them to hang in there!!! We will provide them with the necessary skills to become proficient. • Adjustment to homework every night! • Necessity for organization and time management. • Recognition that your child will have ups and downs in terms of workload. • Don’t put the community service off until the last minute; it always gets busier towards the end. • Your child may receive their first “B” or “C”; remember Pre-IB courses are weighted for the grade point average. • This is a commitment for the entire family, not just your child.
