Examples of collaborations • Mtb live vaccine by codonde-optimization • Jessica Seeliger (Pharm), Wimmer, Futcher (MGM) • Development of novel tmRNA-peptide live bacterial vaccines • WaliKarzai (BCB), Furie (Path) van derVelden, Bliska, Thanassi, Benach, Mackow (MGM) • Role of Sts proteins in host resistance to Candida ablicans • Nick Carpino, Jamie Konopka (MGM)
Basic ID Research Training Grant • T32 AI007539-15: Molecular and Cell Biology of Infectious Diseases (Wimmer, Bliska) • 5 PhD student slots • Accepts students beginning 3rd year from MGM, MCB or Genetics programs, 2-3 year support • Current trainees/mentors/topics • Chahales(MGM)/Thanassi-Inhibitor of pili expression • Cienienwicz(MCB)/Krug/ Herpes virus infection • Guimet (Genetics)/P. Hearing/ Adenovirus infection • Parrino (MCB)/Konopka/ C. ablicansmorphogenesis • Thomas (Genetics)/Furie/ Francisellapathogenesis
Interdisciplinary training • Scholars in Biomedical Science Program • Graduate students in second or third year of their PhD studies engage in clinical experiences and work on a small, clinically-relevant research project. • Each student and their PhD advisor teamed up with a clinical mentor to design the project and set out the other experiences that the student will undertake in the School of Medicine (for example, going on rounds, attending clinical seminars, and interacting with patients). • The mandatory component of the training will take place over the course of one year, but hopefully continue to take place throughout the student's graduate study. • Matt Wipperman PhD student in Chemistry • Nicole Sampson, PhD Advisor • Sharon Nachman, Clinical Mentor
