Pro’s and Con’s • The pros of joining the military are finding a good job and getting the training. There are opportunities for advancement, education and leadership roles. • The cons are that women are limited in some of the jobs due to restrictions that are set against women. They are separated from their families. Women are considered to be the caretakers of the family and sometimes receive criticism for leaving their families behind. These also suffer from sexual harassment and sexual assault.
Statistics • 3,192 sexual assaults were reported out of an estimated 19,000 -- roughly 52 a day -- between Oct. 1, 2010, to Sept. 31, 2011. The department estimates that only roughly 14 percent of the assaults were reported. The majority of sexual assaults each year are committed by US service members
Helen Benedict wrote a book called the Lonely Soldier • . “Sexual violence seems to be a major cause of homelessness among female veterans” (Benedict, 2009). • It has been reported that 40 percent of homeless women have reported sexual assault while serving in the military. • Many of these women have been raped, punched, knocked unconscious, slashed with knives, threatened with guns and some of them have been mutilated and murdered.
The story of Mickiela • The no child left behind act in 2001 required schools to provide phone numbers and addresses of all students in order to receive federal money and to allow access to recruiters in the schools. • . The military was desperate so they helped students cheat on drug tests, threatening arrest if they did not sign up.
Conclusion: • It will be important to promote more women, and give them the opportunity to become positive role models and to prevent abuse. • The men in the military should face criminal charges, so many of them have been allowed to remain in the military even though they have a history of domestic violence and rape. • Leaders should be held accountable for the behavior of the men in their command. More training and prevention programs should be implemented when people join the military in order gain an understanding of sexual assault and domestic violence. • The current information that is used for training in these areas is full of information depicting women as inferior.
