  2. Buddhism • Siddhartha Gautama founded Buddhism in India. He was born a prince but gave up all his wealth for knowledge. • Siddhartha had the Great Enlightenment when he realized that all suffering is caused by people's desires. He then became the Buddha. • The Buddha believed that to stop suffering you must know the Four Noble Truths

  3. The Four Noble Truths 1. Everyone suffers. 2. Desire results in suffering. 3. If you give up desires, you can stop suffering. 4. Follow the eightfold path to make this happen.

  4. The Eightfold path 1. Right Views to see and understand things as they really are 2. Right Resolve commitment to ethical and mental self-improvement 3. Right Speech abstain from false speech; do not tell deliberate lies & do not speak deceitfully

  5. The Eightfold path, continued 4. Right conduct refers to deeds that involve bodily actions; do no harm to self or others 5. Right Livelihood one should earn their living in a righteous way; wealth should be gained legally and peacefully 6. Right Effort without effort, nothing can be achieved; misguided effort distracts the mind from its task

  6. The Eightfold path, continued 7. Right Mindfulness the mental ability to see things as they are, with clear consciousness 8. Right Concentration concentration on wholesome thoughts and actions; achieve this through meditation

  7. Buddha is not a god, but a moral guide. • There are no gods in Buddhism. • Buddhists believe in karma, nirvana, • and meditate like Hindus. • They do not believe in the caste system.
