Basic Information • The Cambodian Genocide started in 1975 when a group of people came into power called the Khmer Rouge. • The Khmer Rouge wanted a communist government and believed that if you didn’t think communism was a good way of government you should be killed. • In the 1960’s Pol Pot created the Khmer Rouge and was the leader from then on.

  3. Map of Cambodia Thailand Vietnam

  4. Images The Khmer Rouge Flag This is a jail cell and it was only a empty room with a metal bed frame. These are bones stored from the people that died.

  5. Facts • When the Khmer Rouge came to power, their first action in power was to kick all people out of the city that didn’t want communism. This caused around 3 million to leave. • If you had eyeglasses you were to be killed. • And to make sure everything was equal and no man had more power than another he destroyed all markets, schools were closed, no one own private property, and the use of money was outlawed.

  6. More Facts • This genocide killed about 1.7 million people • This is 21% of Cambodia's population • When things started to get real serious the Khmer cut off all foreign trade, foreign languages became illegal, all news papers and televisions shut down, and Cambodia was to be cut off from the rest of the world.

  7. Argument • The Cambodian Genocide was unfair because The Khmer was treating the people of Cambodia unfairly and leaving them with nothing except long days of harsh working.

  8. Supporting Ideas • The people who didn’t want communism had to dig canals for 12 to 15 hours a day in 80 to 100 degree weather. • During this had no breaks for food or water. • The people had t find there own food on their off time. • People were dying in harsh ways such as starvation and exposure (radiation).

  9. Questions • Who was in power and when did they come into power? • Around how many people died overall and what percent of the population was it.
