Wilson • Shocked by destruction and loss of life • Presented his plan for peace to ensure a war like this never happens again 14 points What we demand is that the world be made fit and safe to live in; and particularly that it be made safe for every peace-loving nation which, like our own, wishes to live its own life, determine its own institutions, be assured justice and fair dealing by the other peoples of the world against force and selfish aggression.

  5. What did European Countries want? • France and Great Britain wanted Germany Punished • Smaller countries wanted independence and sovereignty

  6. Treaty of Versailles • Germany must disarm and pay reparations • League of Nations formed • Ethnic groups gained independence Germany was forced to sign it under pressure of French military on June 28 1919 Wilson thinks this is too Harsh for Germany

  7. HOW did America respond to the TREATY?? • US Government did not like that the League of Nations required members to use military force to carry out decisions • TREATY did not pass in the US • Years later, US signed peace treaties with AH and Germany. • League of Nations Failed.
