  2. Stocks • At JA: Finance Park you will be monitoring stock performance. • You will see the stocks rise and fall in value. • Learn some of the most common abbreviations got stocks. • Learn how to keep records of stock price changes throughout the day.

  3. Key Terms • Rate of Return • An investment’s percentage change, factoring in dividends, capital gains, and reinvestment of distributions. • Taxable Investment • An investment, such as dividends or interest, on which taxes on earnings are paid as they are returned. • Tax-Deferred Investment • An investment not taxed until you withdraw the money and begin to use it.

  4. How Do I Read Stock Quotations? • 52 Week High and Low: These columns list the highest and lowest prices at which the stock sold over the past 52 weeks (1 year). • Stock: This is the abbreviated company name. • Sales in 100s: This is the number of shares traded on the day being reported. This amount must be multiplied by 100 to arrive at the actual number of shares traded. • Close: This is the price at which the stock last sold when the stock exchange closed. • Net: This is the net change between the closing price for the day being reported and the previous day. The plus sign means the closing price is higher than the day before, and the minus sign means the closing price is lower.
