The Connection - Acts 6:1-6 • Sub-cultures in Jewish Jerusalem • Hebraic Jews • Born and raised in the land • Used the Hebrew Scriptures • Grecian Jews • Born and raised in foreign lands • Used the Greek Scriptures (Septuagint) • Friction evident between these groups in the Church in Jerusalem • Seven worthy men chosen to deal with the problem – Grecian names • Stephen and Phillip become the key messengers in the next wave Acts 6:7 So God’s message continued to spread. The number of believers greatly increased in Jerusalem, and many of the Jewish priests were converted, too.

Stephen’s Arrest - Acts 6:8-12 • Stephen’s ministry Acts 6:8 Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed amazing miracles and signs among the people. • Stephen’s enemies • The synagogue of freed slaves • The rumour mill • The Jewish establishment Acts 6:12 This roused the people, the elders, and the teachers of religious law. So they arrested Stephen and brought him before the high council.

I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. • The cause of the offense • If Stephen was right about Jesus, then they were wrong

Stephen’s response - Acts 6:15-7:53 • The Jewish establishment had a track record of resisting God:- • They rejected God’s deliverers – Joseph, Moses Acts 7:35-36… 7:37“Moses himself told the people of Israel, ‘God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from among your own people.’ • They disregarded and misapplied God’s law Acts 7:39-43 7:41 So they made an idol shaped like a calf, and they sacrificed to it and celebrated over this thing they had made. • They held an elitist view about where God dwells Acts 7:44-50 7:48However, the Most High doesn’t live in temples made by human hands. As the prophet says (Isaiah 66:1-2) • In defending his own case, Stephen demolished theirs Acts 7:51-53
