  17. What is the comparison between optical illusions and a depressed or suicidal person?

  18. Causes of Suicide More than 90% of all suicides are related to a mood disorder or other psychiatric illness. (Depression, Bipolar Disorder, etc.) • Suicidal behaviors often occur in response to a situation that the person views as overwhelming, such as: • social isolation • death of a loved one • emotional trauma • serious physical illness • aging • unemployment or financial problems • guilty feelings • dependence on alcohol or other drugs • other addictions

  19. Warning Signs of Suicide • Withdrawal from family and friends • Drop in school grades and attendance • Change in sleep patterns • Large weight gain or loss • Unresolved grief and/or a loss • Preoccupation with death • Self destructive behavior • Change in friends/goals/health habits • Any change from normal

  20. Steps of Intervention: 4S’s • STAY • Stay with the person • SAY • Use Communication Skills: • I care…I see…I feel…I will…I want… • LISTEN • It’s okay to ask them if they are thinking about suicide • SAFE • Ask for the modality and be safe • Lethal…available…specific • SUPPORT • Get help • Who knows more than you? counselor, teacher, parent, doctor, pastor, trusted adult
