  1. Cost of Living Calculators and Wages Additional information of potential interest to NDOL Career Centers, Economic Developers, Employers, and Job Seekers. December 12, 2013

  2. Cost of Living Calculators • There is no official government data source that measures the cost of living. • The most commonly cited cost of living index is produced by The Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER). • The C2ER Cost of Living Index (COLI) is limited to 300 cities throughout the U.S., only 3 of which are located in Nebraska (Omaha, Lincoln, and Hastings). • C2ER charges $7.95 for each city to city comparison. • But there are alternatives!

  3. CNN Money CNN has purchased the data, and created their own calculator using the C2ER data. Allows you to compare two cities, and calculates the cost of living difference between the two. Shows price differences in 5 different spending categories. http://money.cnn.com/calculator/pf/cost-of-living/

  4. Bankrate.com Similar to the CNN Money calculator, but more robust. Allows text entry of income. Cities are listed by city name, rather than by state, then city. Price differences are not categorized. http://www.bankrate.com/calculators/savings/moving-cost-of-living-calculator.aspx

  5. Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI calculator measures changes in prices over time rather than based on geographies. Consequently, prices are for the U.S. as a whole. Consider using the Midwest region CPI, which is the closest geography produced, and available on Neworks. http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm
