  2. Today’s plan • Greeting • Review Asg #4 • Lesson:Problem-Solving Strategies, and Certainty • Homework / Questions • Clean-up

  3. Problems

  4. Strategies • What strategies can help you solve a problem?

  5. Easy • Ask someone. • Trial and error. Also known as “guess and check.” • Name things. Invent notation. • After a while, set it aside and come back later.

  6. For Harder Problems • Restate the problem in your own words. • Explain the problem to someone else. • Organize your information about the problem. • Look for structure in the problem. • Draw a picture, make a model, or act it out. • Write equations.

  7. More Techniques for Hard Problems • Check all possibilities. • Be systematic, though; organize your search! • Identify subgoals. • “I want Y. But if I knew X, I could get Y.” • Simplify the problem. • (This can make it easier to check all possibilities!)

  8. Problems

  9. Los Angeles Times, Mar. 6, 1966 This appeared in the Sunday edition of the LA Times, as part of a full-page ad paid for by a Mr. D.W. Arthur. Supposedly, it’s a way to trisect an angle.

  10. Homework • For next class (Thursday/Friday): • 20 minutes on Khan Academy problems. • Week 3 Journal • For Monday: Asg #5.

  11. Clean-up / Reminders • Pick up all trash / items. • Push in chairs (at front and back tables). • See you tomorrow!
