Who were they? • The big ones: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William Cullen Bryant, John Greenleaf Whittier, James Russell Lowell, Oliver Wendell Holmes • First American poets whose popularity rivaled British Romantic poets (i.e. Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats etc.) • Known for adherence to poetic conventions like standard meter and rhyme scheme; this made their body of work particularly suitable for memorization and recitation in school/ home • Popular subjects: the domestic life, mythology, and politics of America • Accessible and relatable – poetry for the everyday American family
