  3. What is CARE? • CARE assists Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) to become registered in Ontario and find employment. • CARE is a government-funded, non-profit, organization with charitable status. • We work with community colleges and health care organizations.

  4. History of CARE • CARE started September 2001 in Toronto. • The Hamilton Centre opened in 2005. • CARE expanded services to Kitchener Waterloo in 2006, London in 2007, Niagara Region in 2009. • CARE has assisted more than 1100 IENs to prepare for registration exams and employment.

  5. CARE’s Success Rates • In 2004, CNO reported that IENs who prepared for exams on their own had a pass rate of 35% • IENs who prepare with CARE have a pass rate of over 80% • 90% of participants get a job within 6 months of completing the CARE program

  6. CARE Centre Focus To assist you in meeting your goals to: • prepare for the CRN and CPNR exams • develop nursing communication skills • prepare for employment as a nurse • practise safely and confidently

  7. CARE Services • Interpretion and guidance around the letters from CNO. • Canadian nursing knowledge and exam readiness assessment. • Individual support and guidance with an assigned case manager. • Customized action plan and time line. • Information about financial support options.

  8. CARE Services • Workplace communication and cross-cultural training. • Exam preparation for RN and RPN exam. • Observational job-shadowing placements. • Workshops: First Aid/CPR, wound care, community health, technology. • Employment guidance.

  9. Who Can Join CARE? • Internationally educated nurses who have worked as a nurse or graduated from a nursing program within the past ten years • Nurses who have letters of direction from the CNO • Permanent Residents of Ontario, Canadian Citizens or Convention Refugees, Live-in Caregivers who have applied for landed status • Nurses with intermediate level English at CLBA level 6

  10. English Requirements • Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessment (CLBA): • Listening: 6 • Speaking: 6 • Reading: 6 • Writing: 6 • Where can you write the CLBA? • What if your CLB levels are lower than 6?

  11. Required Courses Nursing Courses • Professional Issues and Standards • Physical and Health Assessment • Medical Surgical Nursing Theory CARE Language Courses • English for Nurses 1 • English for Nurses 2 • Workplace Communication

Membership and Course Fees • One time $100 Membership Fee • This fee includes: • Case Manager support and guidance • Readiness assessments and feedback • Unsuccessful CRNE/CPNRE results analysis and feedback • Customized action plan • Financial support options and guidance • Observational job shadowing placements • There are additional fees and course costs depending on your action plan.

  13. How long is the CARE program? • This will be different for each individual, but the average amount of time is 6-18 months. • Individual action plans can change due to changes in educational programs/scheduling, CNO requirements or legislation.

  14. Next Steps One of our Case Managers will be available to meet with you personally to discuss your individual situation. You can expect to hear from someone within 2 weeks. Please call for an appointment if you do not hear from us within 2 weeks.

When you meet with a case manager, please bring thesedocuments if you have them: • Letters from the College of Nurses of Ontario • Results of unsuccessful Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam or Canadian Registered Nurse Exam • Proof of immigration status (P.R. card), citizenship (Citizenship card/passport) or live-in caregiver immigration document (IMM 5002 pg 1 and 3 with proof of payment to CIC) • Proof of English language level: Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment (CLBA) Results • Membership Fee of $100.00 cheque, money order or cash
