Social Studies Curriculum Updates • Next Generation Sunshine State Standards for grades 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12: FULL IMPLEMENTATION FOR 2011-2012 • Pacing Guides Available on District’s SS Website • CBC for Grades K-3 and 6 • Scope and Sequence Plans: available on the District’s Social Studies Website • http://socialsciences.dadeschools.net • 2012-2013: NGSSS-SS Full Implementation K-12

Textbook Adoption Updates • Florida Department of Education- will publish list of state adopted textbooks. • District Committees- MAY be formed this fall. • May have to prioritize which grade levels get new textbooks first. • Priority MAY be given to 6, 7, and 11. • Secondary Priority MAY be given to K-3.

  4. Florida State Mandates • African-American History • Hispanic Contributions to U.S. History • Women’s Contributions to U.S. History • Holocaust Education • Character Education

  6. Online Courses • Will be posted on the Social Sciences Website. • African-American History Modules • Power Point on infusing African-American History also available on social studies website.

  7. 7th Grade End of Course Exam in Civics • Timeline: 2012-2013- Field Test 2013-2014- 30% of the student’s final course grade 2014-2015- student must earn a passing score on the EOC in order to receive course credit. Bottom Line: 2010-2011 4th graders- when they reach 7th grade- 30% rule; 2010-2011 3rd graders- when they reach 7th grade- passing score rule to receive credit for the course.

Instructional Projects: Providing Assistance • Elementary Civics Lessons (Grades 3-5) • Currently Published: Grades 3 and 4 (in the edition stage- 5th grade). • Middle School Civics Lessons (Grade 6- in the editing stage). • U.S. History EOC Exam Lesson Plans- geared towards each of the 18 benchmarks- in process- to be published August 2011.

Where can I find these resources? • http://socialsciences.dadeschools.net/ • Click Under Elementary Lessons- Civic Integration: Here you will find pre-post tests, each lesson per grade level, blue print of quiz, and all supporting documents to implement the lessons. • Once edited, other lesson plans will be posted here as well.

Additional Online Resources Upcoming • From the Lou Frey Institute of Politics and Government at the University of Central Florida (www.loufrey.org) • Will provide instructional resources (lesson plans) for the 7th grade Civics course FOR 7th grade teachers that are aligned to the NGSSS-SS Civics EOC Exam tested benchmarks (to be published fall 2011).

Class Size Amendment Update • Required Courses in Middle School- 6th grade World Geography and Future Course 6th Grade World History, 7th Grade Civics, 8th Grade U.S. History MUST MEET CLASS SIZE STIPULATIONS • Courses Required for SHS Graduation: 9th grade World History, 11th Grade U.S. History, and 12th Grade Government/Economics MUST MEET CLASS SIZE STIPULATIONS

Results of Middle School Course Alignment Survey • 270 Respondents • 28.1%- strongly disagreed with proposed changes • 13%- disagreed with proposed changes • 34.4%- agreed with proposed changes • 24.4%- strongly agreed with proposed changes • Bottom Line: Publishers were given the mandate from FLDOE to write textbooks ON Grade Level- switching the course sequence is not feasible at this point.
