  1. Meeting health needs of Ghanaian families in Rural Villages ~ using mobile phones to disseminate home-based health education to improve maternal and child health Presenter: Dr. Frank Nyonator Ghana Health Service

  2. Focus: • To test the proposition that improved health information improves health outcomes • Information delivered to “pregnant parents” • Extended to include the first year of the child’s life Key Innovations • Weekly Messages in language and method of choice (SMS or voice) • Messages specific to the client’s gestational age • Clients can ‘flash’ MoTeCH & be called back with their message

  3. Lessons Learned: Clients Augmenting Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Initiative with a Health information messaging service visit our website at www.ghsMoTeCH.org • Cultural myths and traditional beliefs strongly effect prenatal and birth choices; • Serious lack of basic maternal/newborn health information available in the field With MoTeCH… Messages target beliefs that are detrimental to health

  4. Benefits to Nurses… Post natal care… First year of life ... “I used to get two or three, but last month I had ten deliveries [at the facility] because the clients get the messages and they come. For postnatal they come. Even if they deliver at home they get the messages [from MOTECH] which make them come for postnatal.” “When we see our clients for a child welfare clinic we gather them in a big group to educate them but often these meetings are big and noisy so not everyone picks up what you've said. That's why MOTECH is good because it provides 1:1 info to patients along with personalized reminder messages.” Nurses are very optimistic in meeting maternal and child health needs ….Midwife ….Community-based health Officer
