  1. Alyssum Easter Bonnet Matt Nye and Katelyn Bodily

  2. Alyssum • Common name- Sweet Alyssum • Scientific name- LobulariaMaritim

  3. Alyssum • Herbaceous annual • <8 inches tall, <12 inches width • Full to partial sun exposure • 10-10-10 NPK fertilizer

  4. Planting Alyssum • Lay seeds on prepared soil 3-5 inches apart, and cover with vermiculite. They grow fine in crowded conditions. The best time to plant is early Spring. • Try not to plant near areas that people gather in- they tend to be a bee magnet

  5. Germination Time and Conditions • Average germination time is between 1 to 2 weeks • Best temp. is about 65-70 degrees F • Keep soil moist, but not wet • Light needed for germination

  6. Blooming • 8-9 weeks after germination • Flowers are small clusters ranging in colors from white, to pink, to purple, to red, and so on • Looks best among spring blooming flowers, such as tulips and daffodils

  7. Caring for Alyssum • Water moderately when soil is dry • Fertilize soil about every month or so • Remove dead leaves on a regular basis

  8. Diseases and pests to watch out for • Watch out for Downy mildew (a grey/white fungus that grows on the underside of the leaves). To avoid, be sure to irrigate correctly. To get rid of, remove affected leaves, uproot the plant, and move to a new place to provide proper air circulation.

  9. Diseases and pests to watch out for (continued) • Aphids and Whitefly. To prevent, get rid of dead leaves regularly, introduce insect predators, such as lady bugs, and plant Marigolds, because they produce a repelling smell. To get rid of, at first signs, clip off affected leaves to get rid of eggs and pupae. When there are adults, vacuum the leaves in the early morning then freeze the bag to kill the pests. Also use sprays, like hot pepper juce mixed with water. Aphid Whitefly
