  12. Electronic Reserves • Professors send in their reading lists before the start of the semester • Access Services (circulation) retrieve the materials and scan copies • Students receive passwords from their professors to access the materials online

  13. Searching the Catalog • Exact Search – when you know the title or author you want

  14. Searching the Catalog • Keyword search – useful for topic searches or when you know a partial title or author name • Use AND / OR to create a more complex search

  15. Searching the Catalog • Search limits – narrow your results by • Language • Year • Item type (video, map, etc.) • Special collection

  16. Universal Catalog/Borrowing • Soon, all catalogs will be searchable all at once. • This will allow anyone to search any other Georgia library’s catalog • And borrow books from that library to be delivered to their home institution • Universal Borrowing will be a great asset to distance learners, especially those who do not live in Athens but still want to check out books from the UGA Libraries

  17. GALILEO • <http://www.galileo.usg.edu> • 300+ resources • Article databases (many full-text) • Encyclopedias & dictionaries • Government publications • Business information • Statistical sources

  19. GALILEO's purpose • Educational institutions combine their purchasing power as a consortium to obtain access to proprietary (commercially produced) databases at a lower price • Gathers all resources into a common interface

  20. How GALILEO works • Each type of institution has a different collection of resources • Institutions may buy additional resources with their own funds • An institution can add new resources to its interface (GLRI) • Off-campus access by password

  21. Technical support • GALILEO technical support • Online report form • Institutional contacts • Special email address • Database vendors • Consulted by GALILEO or institutional contact person

  22. Challenges • Working within a large organization • Achieving consensus • Making changes that affect all GALILEO members • Maintaining a common interface while allowing flexibility at the institutional level

  23. Electronic Journals • GALILEO contains thousands of online journals, newspapers and magazines • When you are looking for a specific title, use the Electronic Journal Locator • The EJL tells you what database has your journal • What dates are available online in full text • The EJL was created and is maintained by UGA Librarians

  24. Searching the EJL Type the name of the journal in the search box … To find where the it’s located online in GALILEO or on the WWW

  25. Online Reference Service • Remote Reference Unit – answers reference questions from UGA students and faculty, other libraries, and from the public. • People may call, email or regular mail their inquiries. • Frequently Asked Questions provides many answers instantly. See http://www.libs.uga.edu/askaquestion. • Answered over 9000 questions via phone and email in 2003 from people all over the world!

  26. Chat Reference Students click on this button while using the online catalog or Library website • Available in the Student Learning Center, Main and Science Libraries • Often used for distance learners • Chat with a librarian and share webpages. The librarian can control the patron’s browser to instruct use in database searching and web browsing. This is what the librarian sees. Buttons allow you to chat, push webpages to the patron or control their browser. A chat box appears on the student’s web browser
