  1. Warm Up • Place your signed syllabus sheet on you desk (if you have not handed it in already) • Take out a piece of paper and free write an answer to the following question: • What is geography?

  2. Geography • The study of where people, places, and things are located and how they relate to each other. • Geographers use 5 themes to help us understand the links between people and the Earth

  3. Theme 1: Location • The position on the earth’s surface • Different types of location • Relative location • Where a place is, in relation to something else • Absolute location • The exact place where something is

  4. Theme 2: Place • The physical and human characteristics of a place

  5. Theme 3: Interactions Between People and Their Environment • How people change their environment, or change to be in their environment

  6. Theme 4: Movement • People, goods, and ideas going from one place to another

  7. Theme 5: Region • An area with unifying characteristics • Can be physical, cultural, political, or economic features

  8. 1. Many of the trees in Media are deciduous and lose their leaves in the fall. • PLACE 2. When it is cold outside most people wear heavy coats, gloves, and a hat. • INTERACTION

  9. 3. Parts of PA, NJ, DE, and MD are grouped together because they are near the Delaware River and share common characteristics. • REGION 4. Media can be found at approximately 39 degrees North latitude and 75 degrees West longitude. • LOCATION

  10. 5. Many people in the United States eat Chinese and Italian foods. • MOVEMENT 6. The countries of the Middle East and North Africa are often studied together because they share similar cultures. • REGION

  11. 7. The United States in the northern hemisphere. • LOCATION 8. Many people in our area have sump pumps to prevent water from leaking into the basements of houses. • INTERACTION

  12. 9. Philadelphia is known for the Delaware River, the Eagles, and cheesesteaks • PLACE 10. Gunpowder was invented in China, but now you can find it everywhere. • MOVEMENT

  13. Create Your Own • Create one example for each of the five themes of geography • You will hand this in!
