  1. Data Plane Measurements Deniz Gurkan Roopa Krishnappa October 28th, 2008

  2. Motivation • GENI Spiral 1: • Remote access to data plane measurements from • network boxes with embedded monitoring • readily accessible measurements through OS • built-in monitoring not open to users (for instrument OS purpose only) • external instruments connected to select network nodes • Measurement access by applications/users through the aggregate manager • provide applicable commands for programming/configuring specific measurements • Need information from the Spiral-1 prototypes

  3. Outline • Data Plane Measurements • External Test Equipment • Embedded Measurements • Which project are we? • Collaboration with Prototype Projects • Measurement Challenges • Integration Plan • Milestones • Future Collaboration with LEARN – Lonestar Education and Research Network

  4. Chip Elliott – GENI Project Director, Oct. 29th, ‘07, 1st GENI Engineering Conference: Strawman GENI Block Diagram From: http://www.geni.net/docs/Building_GENI_Time_to_Start.pdf

  6. Collaboration with Prototype Projects • From Substrate WG System Engineer Report: • Overview of measurement resources • Discussion of external test equipment resources • Connections, bandwidths, interfaces • Discussion of internal measurement resources • Access to information • Discussion of measurement resource sharing • Discussions of measurement resource configuration, programmability • Active collaboration with other Spiral-1 projects: • How optical layer measurements will help future experiments: “Real-time measurements” • Substrate level measurements to enhance experiment resources: “ORCA/BEN”

  7. Spiral-1 Clusters DETER ProtoGENI Measurement data for better provisioning & cross-layer communications research: trust and security interaction: components and available measurements Measurements on data plane interaction: measurements available to the Aggregate Manager and from the CMU Testbeds, data plane measurements as resources for Instrumentation Tools, substrate level data plane measurement resources for the Measurement System PlanetLab Measurements on data plane interaction: components with potential measurements in PlanetLab, SPP Overlay Nodes, Enterprise GENI, Mid-Atlantic Network, Great Plains Network, and Provisioning Service

  8. Spiral-1 Clusters cont. ORCA Measurements on data plane interaction: components with potential measurements in ORCA/BEN, Vehicular Mobile Network, GENI Sensor/Actuator Network, GENI Sensor Network ORBIT Measurements on data plane interaction: contribute to creation of the measurement framework in ORBIT through substrate level data plane measurement resources, determination of measurement resources in GENI base station node towards usage possibly after Spiral-1 in WiMAX

  9. Measurement Challenges Collaboration with prototypes to gather information on measurement points/components/resources: • Overview of measurement resources • Discussion of external test equipment resources • Connections, bandwidths, interfaces • Discussion of internal measurement resources • Access to information • Discussion of measurement resource sharing • Discussions of measurement resource configuration, programmability Remote access of measurement configuration is key to the future popularity. Measurement architecture has to be designed hand-in-hand with measurement plane to prevent any interface/ interoperability problems.

  10. Measurements • External Measurements: Depending on needs assessment with control framework and real-time measurement capabilities, external measurement components will be investigated. • Embedded Measurements: Already available at the network nodes.

  11. Examples of Embedded Measurements • Ciena CN 4200: • Bit error rate, optical power • Protocol specific performance monitoring (Remote Monitoring (RMON) for Ethernet connections) • Performance monitoring on network services • 2 x 10/100BaseT Ethernet ports for remote connectivity, and a RS-232 serial port for local craft access • Fujitsu F7500: • Optical performance monitoring, wavelength management, lightpath circuit tracking • Topology discovery and display • SONET and Gigabit Ethernet performance monitoring • Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN) cable or RS-232 serial cable • Infinera DTN: • Full digital access to the optical layer and performance monitoring, fault management. • Ethernet- based craft interface, remote connection via the in-band management channel carried by the Optical Supervisory Channel (OSC)

  12. Components of an Aggregate measurement boxes buffering passive taps measurement data access Figure by John Jacob, Substrate draft document

  13. Integration Plan • Substrate: contribute by providing measurement resources for all components and aggregates of Spiral-1 prototypes • GIMS: contribute through the report of what is available as embedded measurements in Spiral-1 • Long-term impact: match experimenter/ researcher use-cases with what is available on prototypes already and then project what can be included to enable future experiments.

  14. Integration with Aggregate Manager • Slice Coordination • Among Users: • Component manager • Resource management • Test and Measurement • Instruments: • Different interfaces • Stream, parameter, alarm • Multiple users • Service  hardware • Designed for current IP • clean-slate research? • Devices (& Links, Services) • Under Test: • End-to-end • processing intensive • intelligent output • Link level measurements: • standalone or embedded • sensor output (raw) Measurements O&M • Complex Flexible • Connection Requirements: • Data plane and measurement plane • Data archiving • Component manager connections

  15. Milestones 1) March 1, 2009 • Identification of instrumentation technologies with remote access capabilities that can be leveraged into a networking environment. The connection methods and design for integration will be delivered. • A report will be presented to the substrate workgroup meeting during 4th GEC. • Demo on LEARN with accessible embedded and possible external measurements on the network nodes. 2) August 31, 2009 • Conceptual design of the GENI measurement framework with remote programmable and accessible instrumentation will be delivered. • Measurement design will be finalized for the GENI platform based on available off-the-shelf instruments. The final design will be delivered to the GENI workgroups and GPO during the GENI Engineering conference.
