  2. Why do domestic violence survivors & children end up at homeless shelters? • Forced to leave a dangerous situation • Lack of immediate resources • Unaware of specific resources available • DV shelter unable to assist • DV shelter unwilling to assist • Lack of support from friends & Family

  3. What is different for DV survivors? • Safety concerns • CPS: “Damned if she does; damned if you doesn’t” • Barriers to marital assets • Abuser’s Sabotage • PTSS/PTSD

  4. Response to DV Victims/Survivors • Ask the question • Assess DV resources available • Plan for their safety • Keep her informed • Technology • Barriers • Safety Planning (now & future)

  5. Why does she go back? • Lack of resources • Lack of access to resources • Fear of losing her kids • Fear for her or her child/children’s safety • Abuser tactics • Misinformation • She is hopeful

  6. Identifying Services • What does she need • Where has she been • What is available

  7. Other Issues • DV services blocked due to chemical-dependence/ mental health issues • The Family is already homeless • Shortage of transitional housing • Long waiting lists for transitional housing • Family size • Shelter availability & Stay length restrictions

  8. Lack of DV specific resources? What are her options? • Return to abuser • Go to homeless shelter • Find a friend or family member to help • Women with children get services first • More services available for women w/ children • Safety in shelter

  9. What are the fears, dangers & barriers? • Abuse tends to escalate • Shelter safety for her & child/children • Confidentiality • Women with children get services first • More services available for women w/ children
