Institutional collaboration in the Brussels-Capital Region: data and tool sharing

Perspective.brussels, the planning agency of Brussels-Capital Region, is promoting institutional collaboration and data sharing to optimize regional development. With territorial platforms like "Monitoring des quartiers" and "Geodata - Urban Projects," urban policies and plans can be defined and assessed. The Brussels Regional Informatics Centre (BRIC) provides high-quality geographical data through UrbIS and develops a data sharing platform called datastore.brussels. State-of-the-environment reports and tools are available for policy makers to address environmental issues and promote sustainable practices.

  1. Institutional collaboration in the Brussels-Capital Region: data and tool sharing

  2. “Better knowing the city of today to build the city of tomorrow”. Perspective.brussels is the Brussels-Capital Region planning agency. As initiator of urban development strategy, our goal is to reinforce an integrated and sustainable regional development by optimizing the way in which the territory is managed and pooling resources, coordinating government agencies and ensuring more efficient collaboration. In order to achieve these goals, we are developing territorial platforms : • “Monitoring des quartiers” offers a database portal with territorial indicators to foster knowledge on territorial disparities and development for diagnostic and territorial analysis and to help define urban policy priority neighborhoods • “Geodata – Urban Projects” (in progress) which will allow Brussels Regional agencies to follow urban development projects (knowing them and their status) in order to analyze spatial dynamics to elaborate urban plans and assess multi-thematic public policies

  3. The Brussels Regional Informatics Centre (BRIC) pools infrastructures, platforms and ICT services, data, and IT human resources for government agencies of the region. The BRIC produces UrbIS, the high quality geographical data that are of authority in the Brussels-Capital Region. To facilitate data publication, distribution, and re-use, the BRIC is developing a platform called datastore.brussels which is a One Stop Shop for opening and sharing data and webservices. This ambitious platform combines INSPIRE and PSI directives and will meet a number of governmental agencies business needs as well.

  4. We provide state of the environment reports for policy makers, among others, to help them outline implementable policies. We promote awareness of the environmental issues among the various socio-economic actors and the public, and to facilitate their transition to alternative methods of production and consumption which are less harmful to the environment, either on a local level or in a broader context. The data collected aim to describe, analyse and report the state of the different Brussels environmental aspects (air, biodiversity, soil, water, noise, energy, electromagnetic waves, etc.) and examining their trends, the pressure they experience and the resulting impact.  We provide different tools to handle data, explore, exchange and promote: • A centralised open source spatial database system • Open source softwares linked to the database allowing the workers of the institution to explore and analyse the data • Flexible web-based application to create interactive maps, metadata, for working sessions or to promote the information to the citizen, etc • Distribution of data for the citizen and collaboration with other governmental agencies
