  1. Tennessee Digital Government Summit - 2005 Voice over IP and converged technologies- An industry overview John Haltom Erlanger Health System Technology Management Division

  2. Tennessee Digital Government Summit - 2005 Agenda • IP networking – The past few years • Deployment factors – The good and the bad of convergence • Applications and their roles: now and future • Converged IP networking – The next few years

  3. IP Networking – Where we’ve been the past few years • VoIP\Network replacement began in 2000 • Complete network overhaul due to lack of vendor support • Nortel Succession 1000e v4.x Pure IP Phone switch – One enterprise, One switch, One network • Over 1,400 IP telephony devices currently in use • Targeted deployment based on renovation plans • Redundant IP Telephone switch • Analog and digital ‘IP media’ gateways to IP phone network • Targeted TDM to IP-based conversion of +/- 500 devices per year

  4. Our customers were asking… • Improved access time to mission critical applications • Shorten time to contact critical-path personnel • Streamline patient-caregiver communications • Improve overall response-time for patients needs • Seamless access whenever possible on wired and wireless – same ‘look and feel’ wherever possible • Minimize number of ‘clicks’ necessary to authenticate • Ability to utilize ‘converged applications’ to assist in managing time\resources • Simple, multi-functional mobile devices

  5. IP Networking – Why we’ve done this the past few years • Predictive network management –IP phones offer greater flexibility (multiple applications on a single device), embedded management functions and ease of implementation than non-intelligent devices • Improve staff productivity –Due to the implementation of WLAN roaming with IP phones, messaging, presence and desktop-based productivity applications • Can you hear me now? –Provide technology (VoWLAN, P/C clients, RIM (Blackberry), etc) to assist clinical and non-clinical staff in breaking down communications barriers and build long-term commitment to clinical partnering and process improvement • Investment protection –Maximize assets and currently deployed technology to keep up-to-date with converged voice/data/video based medical solutions

  6. DeploymentFactors • Network assessment – Make sure your network is functioning properly prior to running any type of converged applications • Good candidates – Select areas where new wiring is a must, or where it would be best served by a single infrastructure • E911 issues – Tracking down roaming and mobile IP phone users is not as easy as it seems and may require a login process • Cost savings – Adding an IP phone device or a soft phone license with headset to an existing P/C will be more productive, as well as save wiring costs. • Support staff training – Train your network staff to deploy phones or your phone staff to deploy networks?

  7. DeploymentFactors • End user familiarity – It takes very little time to in-service staff on the features of an IP device • The mystique of ‘a network phone’ – The network phone can be intimidating to all staff– But shouldn’t • New applications, new concerns – Converged applications need to be treated as you would any other productivity deployment • Workload concerns – With larger deployments where a complete cutover is next to impossible, increased complication and workload will ensue due to the parallel requirement • Single administration and infrastructure – Providing one network to keep up with instead of many

  8. DeploymentFactors • Network Management to the desktop– New IP devices offer real-time statistics on their voice quality • Network Management of the enterprise – Core network management vendors have developed Voice over monitoring tools • Wireless networking – Treated as a valued extension of your wired network, only with extra concerns for bandwidth management • Wireless productivity – Immeasurable gains when wireless devices are paired with existing systems to streamline processes

  9. Converged Applications • Softphone application via Nortel’s MCS5100/i2050 • Freedom of movement – Bluetooth headsets • Take your extension with you – office, home, & road • Presence indicator lets ‘the world’ know you’re online • Your counterparts can tell your current ‘status’ • Choose the device (soft or hard) to be communicated with • You choose the time you wish to be ‘online’ • Instant Messaging • Simultaneous use of softphone and IM means you can get more done in less time • Becoming a standard: will be used as much as e-mail • SIP based softphone client can connect to many different PBX’s • Multiple device capable, not just softphone or P/C application

  10. Converged Networking – Where we’ll be going the next few years • Push failsafe technology to the edge –UPS and power feeds, redundant Power-over-Ethernet devices, HVAC, Fiber infrastructure • Deploy ‘media gateways’ at the edge – These devices will continue to assist in infrastructure consolidation • Switch to ‘virtual-trunking’ capabilities for your inbound and outbound telephony –Regional service providers will offer this technology in the near future, greatly assisting Disaster Recovery efforts • Video over IP and Wi-Fi will catch up quickly –Recent advances in technology and vendor relationships will net an affordable deliverable in this space • Next generation wireless – These ‘super-devices’ are hitting the market, offering Cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Pocket PC, and instant messaging interfaces to existing applications

  11. Considerations for CIPN - Converged IPNetworking • New WLAN and softphone applications are coming out every month, each offering more and more productivity at a lower cost • New Wi-Fi technology will continue to revolutionize the environment we work in • Combination devices\applications seem to be more prevalent this year, this will greatly assist in the ‘one-device for all’ scenario • Newer IP telephony switches should offer higher density and an increased number of ‘media gateway’ interfaces in and out of the IP network • SIP and SSL based VPN technology are opening up the traveling and work-from-home environments • High-availability, zero-downtime LAN switches recently available will have a big impact on overall deployment of converged applications in 24x7
