  1. ELAU3L1 Conflict in the Streets

  2. conflict in the streets Violence and conflict are manifested in many ways. This lesson explores conflict in the following two texts: 1. “Billy and Us”, by Marcus Gee 2. “Death in the Square”, by Calgary mayor, NaheedNenshi Read the following news article and describe how it makes you feel….

  3. gang warfare in Toronto TORONTO, Ont. – A notorious Toronto street gang has left dozens injured and three dead in a wave of shootings in the city’s east-end, including the mass shooting on Danzig Street that killed two young people, Toronto police said on Tuesday. Homicide Det.-Sgt. Peter Trimble said gunfire erupted at the housing complex on Danzig Street on July 16 when members of the Galloway Boys street gang claimed the community barbecue as their own. Young people from Malvern showed up and were asked to leave. They returned later and set off a gun battle. Trimble said at least five gunmen opened fire at the housing complex near Morningside and Lawrence avenues. The gunfire killed innocent bystanders Shyanne Charles, 14, and Joshua Yasay, 23, and wounded 23 people, including a toddler. Toronto police Det.-Sgt. 4. “Billy and Us” Marcus Gee, a political columnist for the Globe and Mail, wrote this essay to bring new light to a growing problem. How might the following excerpt have a different impact from the previous news article?…Police believe the men who killed Billy may have hunted him down, following him home when he got off work. At about 9:50 pm, on November 22, 2010, Billy’s stepfather heard eight or nine shots and found Billy lying outside the front door of this townhouse apartment in a dark entrance corridor. “Billy, talk to me,” he said, holding the young man in his arms. “The ambulance is coming.” But when he felt his stepson’s wrist, there was no pulse. Witnesses saw two men driving away in a dark four-door sedan. Just three days short of his twentieth birthday when he died, Billy was the father of two preschool children whom he was every day. Days after his killing, his uncomprehending two-year-old son was still crying, “My Daddy, My Daddy,” every time someone came to the door. Billy’s mother came to the crime scene the day after, walking past the bullet holes, carefully marked and measured by the police, in the masonry walls. Wailing and stumbling as three other women supported her, she repeated over and over, “I don’t know what’s going on. I don’t know what’s going on.” Before that November day, Billy seemed to be turning his life around. He had recently returned to school to finish his high school diploma. The managers at the BalueBillage discount store, where he worked five nights a week, said he was a nice guy who always showed up on time. They told police they wished they had ten others like him…

  5. “Billy and Us” How do the two accounts of gang shootings differ? Which is more effective, and why? This article is about the shooting of Billy, but who else is affected by Billy’s death? What do you think Marcus Gee hopes to accomplish through writing this essay?

  6. NaheedNenshi is Calgary’s thirty sixth mayor. He wrote this essay in 1999, ten years following the Tiananmen Square Massacre. His objective was to express concern for human rights and respect for those who suffered at Tiananmen Square, in 1989. It’s early June, 1989. The Flames have just won the Stanley Cup. I’m a few weeks from graduating high school. I’m off to university in the fall, and I’m excited. I’m thrilled that I’ll be getting out from under my parents, into a bigger world, but I’m mostly fascinated with the life of a university student. Endless debates and discussions about things that really matter, fuelled by Kraft Dinner and way too much coffee. Working together to create new ways of thinking about the world and about how we all fit in it…Across the world, in the place my mother always told me I would end up if I dug a hole deep enough, some other students were having similar feelings…. View the following news cast to see what happens next…

  7. “Death in the Square” Tiananmen Square Massacre In June, 1989, students peacefully gathered to protest the way the Chinese Communist Party ran the economy, and called for more democratic government. Here’s a clip of the events that followed… BBC News – June 4, 1989 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJBnHMpHGRY

  8. “Death in the Square” How did the Chinese government’s response to the 1989 peaceful protest in Tiananmen Square, Peking (today’s Beijing) differ from the Canadian government’s response to Canadian peaceful protests such as “Idle No More”?

  9. “Death in the Square” …A world away, I see the image of an impossibly small person, holding what looks like a school bag, standing in front of a row of tanks towering over him. I can’t stop thinking about that person, and how he gave his life in the pursuit of such a simple, basic ideal, one that I get every day… Mayor Nenshi arrives at what conclusion regarding human rights in Canada compared with the rights of human beings living in other countries?
