  1. An Exposition Romans 2:5-12 The Epistle to the Romans VI “Torah, Halakha, Haggadah” The Mindset of the Apostle Paul

  2. Misconceptions • Men think that because they are moral that they will escape the judgment of God. • Men think that because they do good deeds they will be saved. • Men think that because they are Jews that they have a special favor with God. Note: Some Christians believe that Jews are under a different plan of salvation than thru Jesus alone.

  3. Halakha • Torah—(means; teaching, instruction, scribe, or law is the 5 Books of Moses in the Tenakh. • Halakha—the body of Jewish law supplementing the scriptural law and forming especially the legal part of the Talmud. It is from the verb to walk, therefore a way of acting. • Midrash—it is a method of explaining the Jewish Text, it also makes the text contemporary. Midrash was applied to strictly legal material of Torah in order to yield the action called Halakha. Halachic Midrash is formal and precise regarding grounds of righteousness before God.

  4. The Pauline Mindset • It is important for us to understand that Paul was a Pharisee of Pharisees who trained under the great Gamaliel. He was astute at Jewish history, Law, Halakha, Midrash, Haggadah, Temple life, and the general application of all the above in the daily life of the Jewish people. • In order to understand the scriptures in depth, one should seek to understand the mindset of the writer, the context and life setting in which the text was written, and the purpose for which the text was written, to whom, and why.

  5. Haggadah • Hag·ga·dah also Hag·ga·da (hä'gä-dä', hə-gä'də, -gô'də) n.Judaism., pl.-doth (-dôt', -dōt', -dōs, -dəz). • Traditional Jewish literature, especially the nonlegal part of the Talmud. • The book containing the story of the Exodus and the ritual of the Seder, read at the Passover Seder.

  6. Haggadic Midrash • Haggadic Midrash had to do with instruction regarding habitual character, Godly disposition of an individual, group, or race. It is freer and more spontaneous. It made up a good deal of the spiritual and ethical idealism of the Pharisees.

  7. The Text Romans 2:5-6 (NIV) But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. [6] God "will give to each person according to what he has done."

  8. Jewish History Romans 15:4 (KJV) For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

  9. Practical Instruction 1 Cor. 10:11-12 (NIV) These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. [12] So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!

  10. Mt. Ebal & Mt Gerizim Romans 2:7-9 (NIV) To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. [8] But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. [9] There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;

  11. Deut. 11:29 (NIV) When the Lord your God has brought you into the land you are entering to possess, you are to proclaim on Mount Gerizim the blessings, and on Mount Ebal the curses. Deut. 11:31-32 (NIV) You are about to cross the Jordan to enter and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you. When you have taken it over and are living there, [32] be sure that you obey all the decrees and laws I am setting before you today.

  12. Romans 2:10-12 (NIV) but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. [11] For God does not show favoritism. [12] All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.

  13. The Truth Luke 12:47-48 (NIV) "That servant who knows his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows. [48] But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
