What is Cochlear Implant Surgery?

Cochlear Implant is a fairly simple ear surgery that lasts for about 1.5 hours and involves a BTE (behind the ear) incision. To reach the inner ear, the mastoid bone behind the ear is bored and the electrode is implanted. After that, the incision is closed and a dressing is applied. The patient is frequently admitted to the hospital for observation for one night, although in other situations, the patient might be discharged home the same day as surgery. It is not especially painful, and most patients are able to return to their regular activities within 2-3 days. The balance canal function can

Cochlear Implant is a fairly simple ear surgery that lasts for about 1.5 hours and involves a BTE (behind the ear) incision. To reach the inner ear, the mastoid bone behind the ear is bored and the electrode is implanted. A er that, the incision is closed and a dressing is applied. The pa ent is frequently admi ed to the hospital for observa on for one night, although in other situa ons, the pa ent might be discharged home the same day as surgery. It is not especially painful, and most pa ents are able to return to their regular ac vi es within 2-3 days. The balance canal func on can be affected when the implant is placed in the inner ear. The pa ent might feel frequent dizziness for a week or two a er surgery, however, this can some mes last longer. The implant is not switched on un l the incision has healed completely, which takes around 4 weeks. Parts of the implant There are two pieces to a cochlear implant: External device: comprise of a microphone implanted behind the ear that picks up the surrounding noise. These noises are subsequently digi zed and processed by a speech processor, which is a miniature computer. Small speech processors can be tucked behind the ear, while larger ones must be worn on your belt. Naturally, the larger the processor, the greater its ability to iden fy speech signals from the environment, resul ng in improved hearing. However, as computer technology advances, behind-the-ear speech processors are increasingly capable of producing acceptable results. The impulses from the speech processor are transferred through the skin to the implanted sec on of the device via a magnet. Internal device: is an electronic device that is placed behind the ear, under the skin. The device is a ached to an electrode that is put into the inner ear. The electrode is li le more than a bundle of small wires with open contacts that run the length of the cochlea. As a result, various frequency sounds can be represented by electrical signals transmi ed to different parts of the cochlea.

  2. The auditory nerve is s mulated by 12 to 22 electrodes in today's advanced cochlear implant devices. These mul -channel implants have the advantage of selec vely ac va ng many different nerve fibers, allowing more specific informa on to be transmi ed to the brain. The larger the amount of informa on that reaches the brain, the be er the pa ent's ability to comprehend what is going on in his or her surroundings. Why have the procedure in India?
