The media types here refer to the cabling system of the devices. The cabling can be in twisted pair or fiber optic cabling. The connection of these two totally divergent media is not possible through regular means and to fulfill the purpose media converters or fiber media converters are used. Fiber media converters connect different systems in the local area network, wide area network and metropolitan area network. Another reason for the popularity of the converter is that it is low cost and it supports many communication protocols like Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet and so on. There are different types of fiber optic converter based on speed and transmitters. The first one is simple converter. The simple converter is used when the settings on both the involved media is the same. When it consists of two pairs of receivers and when no data recording is necessary the simple converters are used. Switching converters are used to connect two half duplex segments without joining them to the network segment that is connected by a common medium. Managed like the switching converters but converters are can be managed and modified by a local network connection.
