  1. Algebra Solving Linear Equations

  2. Algebra w stands for a number we do not know yet. We have to work this out. w-5 = 20 To do this we need to get w to be by itself. Look at the equation

  3. Algebra w-5 = 20 The easy thing is to take the 5 away isn’t it? Won’t that will leave w by itself? HOLD ON! Look at the equation Remember your negative and positive numbers! If you start at -5 on the temperature scale how do you get to 0? You can’t take 5 away, you must add 5.

  4. Algebra w-5 = 20 OK, so lets add 5 to w-5 But if I add 5 to one side of the = sign, I have to add 5 to the other. The scales must always balance! w-5 +5 = 20 +5

  5. Algebra w-5 = 20 -5 +5 = 0 w is left by itself w -5+5 = 20 25 +5 20 + 5 = 25

  6. Algebra w-5 = 20 w = 25

  7. Algebra t+6= 14 t+6-6= 14-6 t= 8 Lets quickly look at a couple more

  8. Algebra y-7= 22 y-7+7= 22+7 y = 29
