  1. Understanding our classrooms and students New Faculty Workshop Session 3

  2. CIQ Results • Discussion, and particularly the group discussion, was most engaging for many, but not all • I will vary activity more often • Continuing CIQ this week

  3. Techniques to understand students • Clickers • Poll Everywhere • PollEv.com/douglasharve879 • Text DOUGLASHARVE879 to 37607 to join the session, then text a response. • Backchannel - http://backchannelchat.com/ (Today’s Meet is gone!)

  4. What Students VALUE • Credibility • Expertise and experience • Clear command of the field but often unconscious • Credibility can be built by encouraging questions • Students may be reluctant • Extend your waiting time – allow for silence • Include student-generated questions as part of assignments • Small groups ask questions • Backchannel

  5. What Students VALUE • Authenticity • Allies that have their interest at heart • Words and actions congruent • Full disclosure of teaching practice • Responsiveness • Be a real person

  6. What ARE STUDENTS LIKE? • They lead complex lives • Our assumptions of their motivations are often wrong • Quotes: • “critical and creative thinking only happen in the lived experience of everyday life, and you have to overcome all kinds of doubt and fear to actually think critically or creatively. ” • “Crafting a self is not something you do on an assembly line, it’s not something that happens quickly. It’s hard work, and it’s different for everybody.”

  7. What ARE OUR STUDENTS LIKE? • Circle of voices • What do you think is most important to students in your classes at Stockton? • Individually take 2 minutes to consider the question • Get into groups of 4-5 • Each person shares their answer in one minute - NO COMMENTING • Spend another 5 minutes in discussion • Rule: vMust refer to what the other person said in their one minute • What resonated? What did you disagree with? • Ask a follow up question
