  2. Isolation • Used to prevent others from becoming infected • Can be emotionally difficult • Must wear PPE’s when in the room • CDC recommends 3 types of transmission based precautions

  3. Airborne • Transmission • Spread by the air • Pathogen is very light and tiny • Pathogen suspends on dust & moisture in the air • Travels for long distances (& in ventilation sys)

  4. Airborne • PPE’s Required • Gloves • (HEPA) High Efficiency Particulate Air Respirator

  5. Airborne • Requirements • Private room • Wash hands • Wear PPE’s (Glove, Mask) • Negative air pressure with high efficient filtration • Limit transport (Resident must wear mask) • Single use equipment • Bag linen • Discard infectious trash

  6. Droplet • Transmission • Spread in the air • Spread by droplets in mucus from oral, nasal, & respiratory secretions • Droplets remain within 3 ft. of the resident • Pathogens are too large to be carried in the air currents

  7. Droplet • PPE’s Required • Gloves • Surgical mask (within 3 ft. of resident)

  8. Droplet • Requirements • Private room • Wash hands • Wear PPE’s (Gloves, Mask) • Visitors maintain 3 ft. of space with resident • Limit transport of resident • Single use equipment • Bag linen • Discard infectious trash

  9. Contact • Transmission • Spread by direct / indirect contact • Found of the skin, urine, & fecal waste

  10. Contact • PPE’s Required • Gloves • Gown (with direct contact with the resident)

  11. Contact • Requirements • Private room • Wash hands • Wear PPE’s (Gloves, Gown) • Limit transport of resident • Single use equipment • Bag linen • Discard infectious trash

  12. Reverse Isolation • Transmission • Disease of the immune system • Noncontagious

  13. Reverse Isolation • PPE’s Required • Gloves • Gown • Mask • Must be sterile

  14. Reverse Isolation • Requirements • Private room • Sterile PPE’s • Limit # of visitors • Room air filtered • Avoid children visiting
