  3. What is a Coaching Philosophy? A philosophy is a personal statement of truth, value, and virtue Questions to think about and ask yourself: • What is most important and real? • What are your goals and purpose for athletes? • What are your beliefs? • How will you build (foster) those beliefs? • What traits are most important to you? • Does this reflect your coaching style? *Remember: the experience you provide IS a direct reflection of you – the COACH* #MACWCS

What is a Coaching Philosophy? • Think about how you want to coach. • How do you define and create success? • What lessons do you want your athletes to learn? • What lasting impression to you want to have on your athletes? • Think about your expectations. • How are success and winning related? • Is it worth compromising your philosophy to win? • Should you stick to your philosophy if it means you risk losing? #MACWCS

  5. How do you develop your Coaching Philosophy? Think about yourself, know your objectives, know your context First, get to know yourself! Next, get to know your objectives. Then, get to know your context. #MACWCS

How do I write my Coaching Philosophy? • Keep it simple. • Try to keep it on one page. • Use “we” statements. • Keep each paragraph with a certain theme. • Explain why aspects of our philosophy are important. • Let your personality and core values shine through in your writing. • Give a final thought as it relates to your sport. • Be sure to revisit your philosophy regularly and make adjustments. • Learn from others and don’t be afraid to evolve. #MACWCS

Success vs Winning Success is often viewed as a combination of four factors Ability X Effort X Preparation X Willpower Ability AKA talent, this is both inherited and acquired To have talent is not enough – you must develop this talent Effort Giving as much as possible of oneself Preparation How you use and showcase your ability It should be planned and purposeful Committed investment of oneself Willpower Finding a little more to give and pushing the envelop—GRIT! Growth comes from testing our limitations #MACWCS

Ideas for Success • Realization of hard work and dedication • Healthy attitude towards competition • Spirit of cooperation – caring, sharing, and giving • Self confidence • Having Fun – through hard work, effort, and reaching goals – together • Developing mental toughness • Learning how to win and lose – with class • Having courage • Set goals and stay committed #MACWCS

Coaching Philosophy: Sarah Brant • Communicate • - Let your teammates and coaches know of any issues on or off the field • - Express your thoughts and ideas openly and clearly • Be trustworthy • - Learn to engage yourself in the goals and desires of your teammates • - Work to gain confidence in those you play with • What is talked about within our team, stays within our team • Hold yourself accountable for your actions • - Use your own judgment to dictate your behaviors and be responsible – be on time, go to class, make smart decisions • Teammates make mistakes- accept them, learn from them, and move on. • Attitude • - Always have a “team first” mentality • - Come to practice with a willingness to focus on only field hockey • Learn to keep a positive attitude, even when things get rough • Respect • - Players should not feel they are superior or inferior to any teammate on the basis of year of experience on the team – no seniority! • - Practice good sportsmanship. All opponents play the same game as you for the same reasons – appreciate their efforts • Work hard • - Execute to the best of your ability everyday • - We can only improve if you are willing to give your 100% effort- nothing worth having is easily obtained, give it all you’ve got! • Embrace challenges & frustrations • - Our team’s best learning experiences are from problematic situations • - Understand that we are going to have setbacks and be uncomfortable – success will come when we learn from our disappointments • Identify your own style of leadership • - Learn how to best support our team • - Encourage the contributions and development of your teammates - be an influence! • Be honest • - Your teammates and coaches have confidence in you; be truthful to yourself and others in conduct and actions • - Encourage and support your teammates to reach their fullest potential • Accept the personalities of your teammates • - Understand that everyone is different and we have various pathways to success; nevertheless, we are working towards the same goals • - Embrace the people around you who love the same game you play! • Know what you can and cannot control • - Learn to admit mistakes and move on from them – nobody is perfect! • - Stay focused on what your role is and what you contribute to the team’s success • Enjoy Yourself • - Some of your greatest memories can stem from accomplishing your goals and having fun with your teammates around you! #MACWCS

  10. Practice Planning & Time Management Patience, flexibility, and on-your-toes problem-solving! Break down your calendar year: • In season • Off season • Non-traditional season • Summer/training season – recruiting season? • What are the priorities and goals within each season? • Practice plan Outline: • - Point of Emphasis for each drill  what are you trying to accomplish? What should your athletes gain/know after this drill? • - Academic obligations  who is coming late to practice? Who is leaving early? Who is absent entirely? • - Careful, specific set-up instructions areas, how many stations, dimensions, group assignments or partners? • - Flexibility! #MACWCS

  11. Practice Planning & Time Management Plan your own practice! Time of day? Duration? Length of drills? Drill set-up time? Explanation time? Water breaks? Athletes attending? Coming late? Leaving early? Can’t practice due to injury? Space/area? Gym? Pool? Field? Equipment needed? Groups? Partners? Point of Emphasis for each drill? How or why the drill fits into the game? Point in season? Pre-season? Mid-season? Conference play? Playoffs? Team Announcements? *Use samples on tables as guides to help you* #MACWCS

  12. Time Management Balance other work duties with your coaching duties! Make time for yourself! Work-life balance is key! Be yourself! #MACWCS
